iPod Touch and Dension ice>Link

Anyone have a new iPod Touch connected in their MINI using the Dension ice>Link system??!?! There shouldn't be any issues correct??!?! I currently have a 30G iPod and was looking into purchasing the iPod Touch and didn't want to get rid of my iPod Video if it isn't going to work.

Let me know your experiences. I can't imagine the iPhone would be any different so if you have had experiences with that one and the Dension ice>Link system please feel free to chime in

I just read a post over on the iLounge forums where they said that the DICE wouldn't work with their new iTouch.

I wonder if it will even work with the new 80 & 160 GB iPod Classic units???

Thanks for the heads up.....I'll have to check iLounge when I get home from work. I thought I read somewhere that DENSION went under...anyone know anything about that??!?! I was looking to contact them later this afternoon in regards to this issue but wasn't sure if they were still around.

The Touch should have no problem with the DICE - the 3rd Generation nano and Classic work as well.

The touch will be released next week, as soon as we get our tester from Apple - we'll confirm and let the forums know.

Ok just got my iTouch....Best Buy had them early(?). I'm right now syncing it to my iTunes....I'll let you guys know soon what happens....Keep in mind that the guy at Best Buy said it wouldn't work because the iPhone and the Touch work on OSX and therefore the DICE wouldn't work unless i got an updated one or somehow got a firmware update...we'll see.

That's good to hear. Thanks for letting us know.

It's too bad that the iTouch and iPhone can't output video to the MINI's nav screen though (or any screen for that matter). That's one of the reasons I went with an iPod Classic instead (with the other being storage capacity). It outputs 640x480 resolution video that looks great on my MINI's nav screen.

I'm pretty sure that, like the video iPod, the iPod Touch will output video to an external screen with the appropriate adapter. Looking through the "settings" page on my Touch, it has "TV Out" options, specifically "Widescreen ON/OFF", and "TV Signal NTSC/PAL".

We're told the Touch will not offer this option. Let me know if otherwise.

Well, I can confirm that my Touch has the "widescreen/normal screen" and "NTSC/PAL" options on it, and I can change them. Unfortunately, the dock adapters that give you either composite or component video outputs aren't the same as those for previous iPods, and the new ones for the Touch won't be available until later this month.

But, if you go to the iPod comparison chart here on Apple's website, and look under "connectivity", you'll see that the Touch can provide composite/component video output through a separate AV kit.

Well it works without the function of the click wheel or being able to look at the ipod for info. All it says is "accessory attached." All the functions still work through the h/u but I'm having to get used to it since my 30gb died and I got it replaced with a 80gb classic.

@ScottRiqui,

You are indeed correct in that it does appear that the iTouch supports video out (according to the iTouch review I just read over on iLounge.com). It's only the iPhone that doesn't have the TV out capability.

However, the iTouch apparently doesn't support the full 480p output resolution that is supported by the new iPod Classic models. Instead, it will only output a max of 480i (which is just fine for the screen on the MINI's OEM nav system and so it doen't matter once bit for our discussion here).

@tom_@_eas,

The problem I see for you with the new iPods (i.e. both the iPod Classic and the iTouch), as far as video output is concerned, is that Apple has locked their video output to only work with "approved" cables and/or docks. This means that the Valor iLink-L2 kit you're selling most likely won't work with them (since it doesn't contain the required DRM "chip" that monitors the video output and allows the video out feature to work properly on the new iPods). It may be as simple as using Apple's own "approved" composite cables in conjunction with the iLink unit, but somehow I doubt that. More than likely, the iLink unit just won't be able to function with the newer iPods.

Oops! Never mind as I see that the iLink unit simply accesses the iPod as a Mass Storage Device and then uses its own built-in codecs to encode the videos stored on the iPod's drive/flash (too bad it can't play the same MP4 videos that the iPod UI itself can use, but it's still pretty darn cool). However, this does indeed represent a problem with the new iTouch (and the iPhone) since they can't be used as Mass Storage Devices.

Interesting...

This is a huge problem! I just bought an 80GB iPod Classic and I have the same problem - no access to the Ipod from the iPod itself while plugged into the Dice unit. I specifically purchased the Dice unit because it supported access from both the head unit and the iPod itself. Anybody have a fix? This is an untenable situation for me.

Since the iPod Classic JUST came out (only a week or two ago), I'd doubt very seriously that you're going to find a fix very soon (if ever). You need to remember that the DICE unit was developed looong before the new iPods (i.e. iPod Classic, iPod Nano 3rd Gen, iPod Touch, etc.) were even thought of. Thus, you can't really blame the manufacturer when the new iPods don't work with the DICE units. Not to mention the fact that Apple has a tendency to screw things up royally (for third party developers) with each new firmware update. Oy!

Good news! I could not access the iPod from the iPod interface on the way to work today. Inexplicably, on the way home it just started working. We'll see what tomorrow brings. This morning was the first time I connected it to the Dice unit. Perhaps it needed to go through a power down/initialization sequence?

LIkely the iPod was booted while connected to the DICE. The situation with the 3rd Generation nano and Classic iPods locking the Clickwheel is a result of the iPod and not the DICE as earlier iPods do not exhibit this behavior.

You can have Clickwheel operation and MFSW control while connected if the module is switched to Simple iPod mode, but there will be no text display on the radio.

I have a 16GB iPod Touch and the DICE unit. Previously I had a 5G 60GB iPod. The iPod Touch works flawlessly with the DICE. The 5G worked some of the time but often would not properly intialize.

But really, I want to get the iPod Touch mounted horizontally so I can display the "coverflow" album cover feature in the MINI and use it to select albums and tracks. I was disappointed to find out that when the Touch is connected I cannot access my music library through the iPod at all. I can get the main Touch menu to display but when I press the music button it goes back into "device connected" mode. Bummer.

Same as above - have you set the DIP switches to Simple iPod mode?

iPod Classic and DICE

I can access the iPod via the clickwheel intermittently - I can find no rhyme or reason why it works sometimes and other times it doesn't. Simple iPod mode is not acceptable as I want text displayed on the head unit. This iPod Classic goes back to Apple.

iPod Touch installed with DICE and KUDA mount

I used a KUDA mount with swivel and universal MP3/PDA adapter to install my new iPod Touch.

The iPod mount attaches to the right downtube using one of the existing screws. The DICE iPod connection cable comes out of the glovebox and I just close the glovebox on the cable. There is plenty of clearance and the cable does not get pinched at all. With the swivel mount I can go vertical or horizontal. The universal mount will hold an iPod, phone, PDA, GMRS radio or whatever.

The finishing touch was the two MINIBee splash screens on my NUVI 360 and the iPod Touch.

With the DICE connector set to Simple IPod mode, I have full control of my playlists, tracks and volume from the steering wheel. And I can also use the touch screen on the iPod Touch to select albums, tracks, etc..It can also be used to browse the web when near WIFI. And a passenger can watch movies with the audio coming through the stereo (or with headphones). So there is a lot of flexibility. I do not have text display on the CD player with this setup because I intend to get that information from the iPod screen.

iPod Touch horizontal, using the "Coverflow" feature to select albums:
