HK amp dead
Hi All,
I have an 03 MCS with the HK audio package. After a little digging here on NAM it appears the amp has gone south on me. The rear speakers are the only ones affected... making a "crackling" sound with the music faintly playing in the background. I've checked the fronts and they seem fine.
Can the amp be repaired? I've not seen any threads on amp repair (or simply missed them if they exist.)
It seems like a real PITA to get a new one ($$$) and I guess one can't simply replace the HK amp with your typical variety?
Any suggestions on what to do next?
Thanks...

Has anyone had their H/K amp diagnosed as far as what caused the failure? It would seem like the thing has no moving air. I was wondering if a small fan or even perforating the access panel would increase longevity.
A co-worker of mine who has some ham radio experience seems to think it was; vibration, heat or water. We're unsure about the heat, positive about the vibration and have ruled out moisture. If it is something simple that is on the IC board he thinks it might be worth an attempt to fix, like a resistor or capacitor. If it's the "brains" then he has no idea...
Anything can be repaired, it is just how much time and money you are willing to spend. Nowadays we live in a disposable society and it may not be cost effective to try and repair it. However, if you know a little about electronics, you could dig into it and see if there is anything like a blown cap that needs to be replaced then go buy it and install it. Who knows, you might fix it! Worth a try anyway.
Since it requires some time and effort to get the amp out in the first place I was just wondering if someone had already attempted to repair their HK amp and found it couldn't be repaired or had issues with parts. Some electronics are almost all solid state and have no parts (to speak of) that can be replaced. My experience here is mostly on micros, not specifically these types of devices... but my curiosity might get the best of me this weekend and I'll rip it out anyway.

I just replaced my amp with a used one I got from an online parts request. Paid $150 plus shipping install is very simple.
Google used parts and submit your part request, you will receive many offers most not quite what you need.
Good luck

Thanks LakeHelen... I'll look into that option. Was there a specific on-line request site (or as I suspect they all funnel into one?)
