FAQ about MTH

Who are we?
For over 20 years, MTH develops and distributes software solutions for electronic performance enhancement for cars and motorcycles. We are a German based company and supply many well known tuning companies with our products worldwide.

What do I need?
The tuning for the MINI is done without removing the ECU. All you need is a laptop (WIN 98, ME, SE, XP), an OBD interface and our CARTUNE program. The interface can be purchased at various companies (please enquire for list of producers) and soon also through our internet shop. We will send you CARTUNE via E-mail after receiving your payment.

What is CARTUNE?
CARTUNE is a well known tool for retrieving and writing data into the ECU through the standard on board diagnostic (OBD) plug.
CARTUNE works in conjunction with a PC or Laptop through USB or serial port together with a suited ISO-9141 adapter. The adapter will be directly connected with the cars OBD port.
With CARTUNE you are able to retrieve the application data from the ECU and save it as a binary file. For programming however, a special key code is needed. This key code will be supplied by us after ordering and is car specific.
Doing a checksum for the data before programming is not necessary, as CARTUNE does that automatically. CARTUNE works fully automatic. The only command you have to give is whether you want to write or read files. Everything else is handled by CARTUNE itself.

How do I get my software tuning?
The whole procedure can be done through mail by clicking here . Please also use this address should you require info on other products or need more info about OBD tuning.

What kind of info do I have to supply?
  • Please always give us the following info:
  • exact type/model of your car
  • exact list off all technical modifications that have been fitted to your car
  • what kind of fuel quality is available to you
  • your physical address / country
And then?
CARTUNE generates 2 different files (1 x .org and 1 x .mim). Please send those files to the E-mail address above. Do not use hotmail to send files!! It takes about 5 working days before we send the new file together with the key code back. This key code is valid for one specific car only and will only work for this car.

Important: During up- or downloading files all electrical consumers have to be switched off. Please do not open/close any doors etc. whilst up- or download is in progress. Cell phones nearby or any background programs running on the computer may trigger an error message and/or stop the data exchange!

How do I pay?
There are three different options:
- VISA / MASTER card through our website www.mth-powerchip.de
- Money transfer (info available on request)

How do I contact MTH?
For ordering, help and support please contact us
Website www.mth-powerchip.de
Contact can be done in German, English or French.

What is the story about free files and lifetime free upgrades?
Quite a while ago, we started to give out free files to the German MINI community. Why? Because we are simply MINI crazy. Word spread fast in WWW and all of a sudden we had hundreds of files to do.
Please note, that the once charged 60 Euro were always for CARTUNE, not for a file or any upgrade.
We had to change that for obvious reasons. The story about lifetime free upgrades started somewhere in one of the forums. We are sorry, but we never said so and never promised that.
What we do however for old customers is to still provide free upgrades (if necessary) as long as we can handle that. Also old customers that do have CARTUNE and the standard file already will receive a 60 Euro discount should they want to buy the new tuner file (first order only).

It's awesome to see you guys here - hopefully for a very long time, and with new products along the way! I am EXTREMELY happy with my MTH tuning file, and the CARTUNE software - this is how the car should have been from the factory! All it would take is one test drive to convince anyone, that they NEED this on thier stock ECU MINI - it is a FASNTASTIC upgrade, and well worth every penny!

Good luck guys, and keep up the great work - your recent strides are all in the right direction!

Is CARTUNE something MTH has at their site which we download? Is
that the "demoversion" . I didn't see it.
Don't we need that application to first send the original ECU program
to MTH to register the car?

I thought the CARTUNE was just the communication application to
connect your PC and car. Then there's another file (the actual MTH
program for the ECU) to upload onto the car which requires a keycode.

Im still not clear. i must be missing something here...

I just uploaded MTH to my 03 Cooper last night. Super upgrade. The process was simple.

1. Ordered the USB cable from Sensolutions.
2. Purchased the Car-tune software from MTH (60 Euros)
3. Downloaded 2 files and sent them to Volker via e-mail and asked him how to proceed.
3. He instructed me to send another 90 Euros for the standard file via paypal.
4. Sent 90 euros on Tuesday evening to Volker.
5. Checked my e-mail Wednesday morning and file was there.
6. Uploaded MTH Wednesday Evening.

Thanks Volker

Yes you purchase and download cartune from the site. Yes you need it to get your files from your car. Yes it produces the files you send for modification. Yes you use it to upload the new file emailed back.

Is the tuner version identical (or similar) to the version 5 (five) that was around a few months ago?

What will happen if the dealer does computer updates? Do you have to pay for the update just to get your already paid for MTH software to work with something you do not have control over since the dealer does the updates with out your control?

The registration and download feature on our site is / will be disabled and will be for dealers only. Everything is handled through me now.

Should you get an SW update at your dealer, just send us your files again (incl. your MTH file) and we update it, if necessary. This service cost you – nothing!

MTH just told me that a standard Stage 2 JCWS running on 98 octane at 210bhp will achieve 230bhp with the Tuner File upgrade, this is outstanding

The only concern I have now is the same mentioned by garretwp which was:

What will happen if the dealer does computer updates? Do you have to pay for the update just to get your already paid for MTH software to work with something you do not have control over since the dealer does the updates with out your control?

Anybody have any ideas on this, could it effect the dealers work?

Volker,

I am a little confused. So the Cartune is 60 euros. Your product thread says the tuner version is 300 euros including Carture. How is the transactions handled? Do you pay the 60 first and than get credit?

TIA

I paid 60 when I purchased the software, then the remainder when I sent in my original files. I used Paypal.

CARTUNE is not only for MINI! So there are people that want to buy just CARTUNE. Normally what you do is to pay the full amount and I send CARTUNE by mail.

Mini Facelift

What does "Mini Facelift" refer to on the .de site?

BTW- I've got 140 miles on the "Tuner" file uploaded yesterday & I am 100% pleased with the results!

Facelift has just another ECU.

Good to hear you are pleased. When you did not reset the ECU, there is still a bit more to come after +/- 1000 km. Only then the ECU has fully adapted.

How many MTH versions were avaialble prior to the new tuner and standard file? I always thought that there were a number of remaps depending on the number and type of mods.

You already have a MTH file, save the dealer update with Cartune and reflash the MTH. If you have to go back to the dealer, flash the dealer update back in. It's that easy.

I have both an aftermarket exhaust and intake on a 2003 Mini Cooper (non-S). Am I correct in that MTH will provide approx. 10 hp? I seem to remember some mention of a remap for the CVT. What do MTH remaps do for the CVT?
Thanks
