Have you ever locked your keys in your MINI?
Have you ever locked your keys in your MINI?
I received the following in an e-mail today. I was skeptical so I tried it and IT WORKED
.
Subject: Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come
in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If
you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at
home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your
cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your
car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button,
holding it near the mobile phone on their end.
Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive
your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be
hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who
has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors
(or the trunk).

It's no joke
Okay here's the whole story. When I first read the e-mail to my boss at work we decided to give it a try. The first thing we did was push the unlock button on my car, while in his office to make sure it didn't work. It turned out that even though our building is prestress concrete, my MINI was to close to his office and it unlocked. we locked the car back up and he moved to a different area of the building. At least 100 feet away. I went out to the car and called his cell phone. I was peeking in the window with the phone to my ear and he was pushing the button on my remote by his phone. Nothing was happening, so I waved the phone around by the windshield of the car thinking that whatever antena the remote used it wouldn't be in the door. As I was waving the phone around THE CAR UNLOCKED. I'm pretty sure that the range on the remotes isn't 100 feet especially through steel and prestress concrete.

100 feet may seem like a long way for the remote to operate, but transmitted signals can do strange things, especially with walls and angles. What may look like an obstruction to us may look like an antenna to the signal.
For instance, what if that concrete structure has a mesh frame of metal re-bar inside of it?
If you want to be sure, try it again with 10+ miles in-between the remote and the car. If this method really works, it will work regardless of the distance between the keyfob and the cell phone.

I've also heard and read about this technique. Most people say it works, but you really need to be FAR away from the car. A good test would be to have two sets of keys leaving one with someone who will call you on your cell after you have driven several miles away. You don't have to actually lock your keys in the MINI (just in case). Just lock it normally. If it works, the caller should be able to lock and unlock your car several times over the cell.
It's almost like TV's Mythbusters. It's either plausible or bogus.

So then potentially someone could post the signal via video or audio and then have that readily usable....I don't see this as feasible. What about the fact the lock, ignition, and fab chip are all linked to the specific vin through the ews? We went through hell when installing a new ignition on our 04 s. We had to reprogram the fab even without having the unlock buttons on the new replacement key....then reprogram the ews central box to match the new vin, and have corresponding locks ignolition fab chip and ews programming. Then after so many issues with the original system we used the 06s we had previously system to have a full matched set and still had to reprogram the vin. If the signal from Amy key unlocked the doors the keys would be interchangable. You definitely need your key to operate due to the anti theft. Otherwise you'll set of the immobilizer when you open the door if your lucky enough to unlock it...this doesn't make sense to me. If it works please post related video link for your button, as currently I'm researching how to retrieve my only key from inside my locked 04....
could someone then potentially post video or aufio
