Odd Squealing Noise
Odd Squealing Noise
I have an odd squealing noise coming from the belt/ passenger side on the engine at idle >than 1000rpms. Has anyone else had this problem? Of course the service monkeys at Schomp couldn’t hear it during my 2-½ hour
oil change. The sound happens in or out of gear only at idle and goes away <1000rpms. I am guessing it’s a belt, water pump or alternator??? I have read other threads of squeaking / squealing noises relating to the clutch but, it sounds from these post that these noise happen only when the clutch is engaged into first gear. I do not think this is my case. Any ideas??? Thank You, Richard

I get that noise but only when I'm shifting into 1st gear. It's been repaired once and the guys at Schomp told me it was the flywheel? I guess living in a hilly area they told me there was a lot of strain on it when I was easing it into 1st gear. They were able to replicate the noise when they put the parking brake on and tried to put it in 1st gear to drive.
Same noise as initial post
I have an 07 MC base, and it has been running great. Yesterday, however, I was driving to the grocery store, and when i pulled into the parking space, i heard this odd squeal. I had never heard it from my car, so at first I thought it might not have been mine. I killed the engine then turned back on, and it was back. I noticed, like in CooperRs said, that it only would do it when i was at or under 1000 rpm. It doesnt seem to be a constant noise, as it seems to go a way and come back (even when idle under 1000 rpm) When i came back from work yesterday, I didnt notice it as harsh as it was initially, however, I dont know if my paranoid ears are hearing things or if the noise has morphed, but it seemed to be a constant, less abrasive squeak.
I am no mechanic, but to me it sounds like a belt or bearing? I have an appointment with the service folk at my local mini shop, hopefully they can fix the problem, if there is one.

Hey, well if i were you i would first try changing the belt. it costs 20-30 dollars, the part number from NAPA is 25-06-0415. ill do that for you if youd like, just buy the part. it would only take 30-45min....i have all the tools and i have done it on my car as well as a few others...that would be my first suggestion. Let me know, feel free to call me 720-878-5485 if you have any questions.
it would be a constant, if the belt is old, cracked, worn, stretched or even just worn down the belt may be slipping. I had that problem when i changed the pulley on my car, it was to big and even when i started the car i would get a little "cherp" out of the belt...also it wouldn't hurt to change it if it has some miles on it just to be safe. sometimes under heat and age the belt will stretch and become to big and then you'll get some noise out of it..
you know come to think of it i have a spare belt i could just give you if you're interested???

yes, almost identical to mine.......well, being MC, 2007, very close mileage, same external temperature conditions when noise was noticed.
I already have an appointment with my mini dealer for this week. I don't feel it is something of high priority, however, I would like to see if it is something else. also, I dont have any problem having them do anything to it, I opted for all the warranties I could get, I didn't want to be paying on something that was out of warranty down the line.
