Membership Questions

I have 2 questions:
How do I get my membership card? (I paid at the August Meeting)
Who offers discounts to members? (Besides G-Ville Dealership)

I am looking for these items if anyone knows where and if they give a discount:
Factory Grill - For new color
New Pulley (19%)
Seatbelts - Schroth
M7 Springs
Euro Parcel Shelf

I think that's it right now
Thanks,
SoCar S

If you contact the secretary through the club website you should get an answer to the card question.

You get a discount at Century MINI in Greenville, MINI of Charleston, and at Automotive Accents, also in Greenville.

The performance handling mod guy who was at the Charlotte meet at Jillians offered a discount on his suspension mods.. MiniNC could probably give you details on him..
You still can't beat the price on the parcel shelf at the MINI dealer in Cleveland.

Hey G.
Can you come to my house and do all the work????

Just kiddin...
Serious though I need to come up there.

The one thing about the pulley. I don't want it to taco my clutch.
How doe the S's handle the pulleys? Have you had part failures?

Be careful on which pully you get.. Some of them cavitate the water pump, and one in particular cavitates it in the prime running RPM range, where you spend most of your time..

...from our non-supercharged friend, Ed!

heh, you know i have to give you as much hell about that as you do saying i have trouble keeping up with you in the mountains!! ahh, i can't wait til the next time we do that - i'll try not to run too far off ahead!

most of what Ed said is true, inherently, the reduction in the supercharger pulley will cause the water pump to fail prematurely... when asked about the 13.8% reduction that the JCW kit includes, Mike Barrett, our contact with MINIUSA told me specifically:

The kit is factory installed, and therefore the pump is under warranty. IF and WHEN it blows, it will be replaced by the dealership at no extra charge.
The eventual process of the failing water pump will take YEARS to occur, granted the car does not live in the 7K rpm range. But think deeper into what is going on here - I drove a 98 Honda Accord V6 coupe, with an automatic transmission. The tranny was good for 200lbs/ft. of torque, which is what the six came with stock. ANY, and I mean ANY more torque over that limit decreased the life of the transmission exponentially. I had 5 LONG years of abuse associated with that car, and nothing happened.

Luck? Maybe, but that's how cars are designed. If a manufacturer decides to make a car with a certain amount of power, why would they want to develop a beefy clutch that exceeds the amount of power they set it with initinally, causing more R&D dollars to be spent which leads to an increase in the overall price of the car. Honestly, if car companies wanted us to mod the cars, they wouldn't be limited to the extent that they are. Things will break, levels will be overcome, and parts will need attention. That's the name of the modification game.

Conclusion? Don't limit yourself to a 15% pulley if you want the 19%. The pump will fail either way, maybe a few months further out if you get the 15 over the 19, but still. Take this post with a grain of salt, as you are reading a post by someone who couldn't care LESS about a factory warranty - I bought my car to have fun, and if tearing stuff up means I'm having fun, then so be it. That point is CLEARLY evident from the month I've been without my car as I replaced the clutch and flywheel!!!!

I've read that having a dealer do it, the whole thing will only set you back a bit over $2K ($2500 was what one poor soul was quoted)

membership and stuff

SoCar S I had joined M2C2 before the meeting at Century and I haven´t gotten my membership info either. I hope to get it some time soon.

As far as the performance mods go, the real question is what do you want to do with your MINI? For example, I have always wanted to get into autocross/SOLOII and now I can with the MINI. I made the choice to get a short shift kit and a rear swaybar before reading the SOLOII rules. Because of this I get put in STX with the Subaru WRX (at least it isn´t the STI) The pully does throw you into a class the MINI is out of realistic competition and the reason I am not going to get a pully.

On the other hand, if you want to have fun and not worry about things like class competition.... I would suggest the pully (17% or 19% depending on how much you want to stress the engine) and a rear swaybar (I have the H-Sport comp bar and love it) NAM is a good board to find out what others have done and what problems they have had. Search for some of the issues with the 19%. Belts and possible water pump problems can be found.

Ed and Mike, want to have fun? There is an autocross in Clemson on Nov. 13. Want to see who can´t keep up?

(current student at clemson talking)

I'm always at the autocrosses out there. Are they fun, hell yes. Are they well organized, not in the least. Are they a good judge of who's car is more capable? No way - too short of a track means high speed, sweeping turns are only best conquered by the RWD Miatas and such. Though it should fare that MINI's would be killers on that type of course, it isn't the case. Its been my understanding that the officers (my former business partner is now the president of the club) ensure the course designs look that way.

But for sure, I'll be out there on Nov. 13th with my car in top running shape.... hopefully by then I'll have a few more tricks and surprises up my sleeve! heheh

Thanks to the transition of leadership, some confusion. and getting organised and all, we're a little behind on getting out membership packets.. We're in the process of getting membership cards with the new logo made, and hopefully we'll have everything on its way in the next couple of weeks. We will also be sending out the new cards to those members who have renewed their membership.

We also have two new companies in the Charlotte area offering discounts to members also. See this link for more info:
