Clutch install

does anyone know if a clutch/lightweight flywheel/lsd requires any special tools from BMW? If so can they be purchased at HarborFreight? Anyone that has done a clutch install please respond with advice.

This is not a job for someone without experience,

Replacing the clutch on a mini is hard enough, but if you need to open the transmission to install a LSD.....is asking for real trouble.

My recommendations, if you would like to take the tranny out, take it to a shop to have the LSD installed, as it needs to be set properly.

hope this helps

i'm pretty sure this was posted by another NAM member, no instructions but you get an idea of how much "work" it is.

All, in it's gory detail...

Only one special part. But a lot of work. You'll be able to tell if you can do the work by looking at all the steps.

No special tools for the clutch and flywheel install,

You will have to support the engine when taking the transmission out, there is a special brace for that, but you can do without.

For the LSD, I will check with a good speed shop or transmission shop.

Matt,
Just what i was looking for. I am not in any hurry to finish it but i am going to start tomorrow. The worst part is that I was supposed to be at the dragon today, with a slipping clutch I didnt think I would have too much fun. This seems like a lot of work but not out of my relm. Again thank you so much I will be book marking that page.
Thanks all
Brandon

Personally, I dont think that its worth doing it myself. I would bite the bullet and pay the dealer. *ouch*

Not Mr Money Bags

if i were made of money that is definately what i would do, but i am a poor college kid that would rather hear my parents complain about me taking up space in the garage than have to work a month to pay for someone else to do something i can do. By the way its going well so far, sub frame is out half shafts are dissconnected from tranny and tomorrow or the next day the tranny will be droped. Luckily the parents are letting me drive the beater car around. Most mechanically inclined persons could do this job if they have the time to allow. One big problem now for me is that i am in the middle of final exams.

Good thing too! Since yours is an automatic you'd be really disappointed to do all that work and find no clutch in there!
