F54 Knocking wheel steering low speed
Knocking wheel steering low speed
Hello All,
2022 F54 JCW 54,000 km. No mods.
Been looking all for discussions of knocking/ clunking wheel steering at low speeds and can’t seem to find anything. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Last couple of weeks, manoeuvring at low speeds whilst parking, I’ve noticed a knocking feeling both left and right. What would feel similar to maybe a lack of fluid in a hydraulic steering system.
Any clues?

I might be having the same issue on my 2018 S. (41,000 miles) Only at very low speeds like parking or making a right or left hand turn at an intersection does it "knock" Other than that it acts and feels fine. I've been thinking it's the tie rod ends. I haven't had time to jack the car up and test that but it seems to make sense.
Maybe a motor mount, these mounts are known to go bad and make sounds? Maybe the fwd to reverse is making the mount move a bit to hit?

**Update***
I torqued all the nuts to 140Nm and still feel a light clunking at parking speeds on a flat surface when moving left and right. Feel light knocking through the steering wheel and it may be worse when reaching the limit of turning the wheel either way.
I had visually inspected the upper engine mount and don’t see any significant wear. The knocking is even more obvious when stationary. No knocking is apparent at speed when the steering wheel isn’t being moved to its maximum turns.
It’s 2022 JCW with 19inch wheels and only 33k miles /54k km.
Anyone with any other ideas? Would be greatly appreciated.

Update 2
Found a probable cause.
We have a short dusty road to reach the house. As the snow and ice melted, the dust turned to a wet paste. That paste appears to have caked itself in the bearing at the upper strut mount area.
Went to have my summer tyres mounted today and when they lifted the car, the powder dropped from the top of the suspension.
No more knocking feeling. This also explains the timing and the fact that it was intermittent.
