R56 base cranks-no voltage at coils

Just helped my granddaughter get an 07 R56 base. Ran fine coming home. Cranked to check alternator function and it died while idling and won’t start. I have narrowed it down to no spark and no 12 volts at the coils on the green wires. Relay and fuse were checked. Voltage on fuse bot nowhere else. I came across a page that said to ground red wire pin 6 in the X4010 connector in the under hood fuse panel as sometimes the ground fails and by grounding this pin you can get voltage to the computer so it will fire. I can find no identifying pictures anywhere naming that connector. Anyone have any insight to this? Thanks! Don

Update if anyone is interested, finally found the fuse box connector and grounded small red wire on pin 6. Amazingly then I had 12 volts at the coils and it fired up! So now I know the computer hasn’t died but now I have to find why the thing is dropping ground. I am going to have to stick with working on MGs.

I seem to recall that the grounding straps can become unreliable so I'd locate and take a look at those.

Sounds like you have plenty of car aptitude and you're already heading down the MINI rabbit hole! Keep with it.

Good luck

Think I narrowed it down to the corroded contacts in the footwell fuse box. So bad that three of the pins on the lowest connectors have disintegrated. Have to replace pin connectors in the terminal blocks. That is after I remove the carpet to dry it out . Ask me why I don’t want a sunroof…

Check this ground X64516; if it's disconnected or poorly connected you won't have a completed primary circuit for the ignition coils. Don't forget to counter hold the 10mm valve cover bolt when you tighten the 8mm ground wire bolt.

Power comes from X60211 connector, pin 5 at the DME, green wire.

Thanks for sending the info and images. At the present time I am removing the carpet to dry out the interior as I think there is about a half inch of water in the passenger footwell. I have gotten the correct fuse panel to replace the fubar’d one. This car has a lot of weird problems that I think were being caused by the damaged fuse panel. It has been wet a long time. As soon as I get it all sorted there I am going to go over all grounds and voltages and maybe it will run!

Soaked is more like it, pulled the carpet out and it has been hanging every day in the 90 degree heat for 3 days now and I can still squeeze water out of the foam padding attached to the bottom of the carpet. Hard to believe that all that water came from the sunroof drains but I guess it could have been in there for a while and just kept building up. Need to invent a waterproof cover for the footwell module and the fuse panel. Need a thinking cap.

yep we have the drains fix kit linked above, MINI has not released the full fix for the FRM yet, my guess is new water resistant module and maybe a drain fix or TSB. My MINI was not on the recall, but i bet someone will post up what was done.

We are in North Carolina so I don’t think we will be able to take advantage of the recall. I have to check all the seals on th sunroof, maybe hose it down really well while the interior is out and check for leaks. The front drains seem to be clear, still have to check the rear. Glad my R53 doesn’t have a sunroof

Wonder of wonders, after changing the fuse panel it actually started and ran and the headlights work again. Now on to other problems..

Excellent! Rule of thumb ... if you see propeller marks on the roof of a car ... don't buy it.

Hey! Glad you got it worked out. I am having the same problem. Didn't connect the flooding to why the car wouldn't start but here we are.

How did you find what part number you needed? Mine is a 2010 S convertible (different than yours) and I am thinking the fuse boxes are likely different between models?

Thanks!

Hi, The only way I know to get the part number is to remove the fuse box and there should be a sticker with a bar code and part number on it. I read that a replacement box should be an exact match or there will be issues with things not working right. Good news is that the fuse box isn’t hard to remove. I would disconnect the battery before you do it. Hope this helps and good luck!
