The R in the R5- series stands for Rover.

Just curious what the F in the F series stands for?

Interesting.

Thanks.

So, the F codename is basically an extension of the E series ( ‘Entwicklung’ ) yes?

Makes sense that they use the 'true BMW' designation as the MINI F-series is all BMW, and accordingly the next generation will be a G?
i.e. G56?

Appreciate the answers...

...I'm finally getting around to reading Graham Robson's New MINI book and it never dawned on me that the R stood for Rover,
so that's a new tidbit for me.

I also found it ironic that the early problematic gearbox, the R65 (aka Midlands), was a Peugeot design...

BMW had wanted the car to have a Getrag gearbox, but the original UK engineers put in the R65 gearbox instead, because it was $170/car cheaper, more compact with a two-shaft as opposed to a three-shaft layout, and no inherent cyclic vibrations, so a Dual mass damper was not needed.

The R65 was an existing major component, which was already being manufactured on the Longbridge site, and was in large scale use in other Rover Group front-wheel-drive cars. Originally a PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) design, it was well-proven, and well thought of.

Although the extended F56 face was regulation induced, I do think that they could have done a better job than how the final result came out --- that ped-friendly front looks out of proportion to my eye and I've read quite a few others opinion with the same critical response.

It reminds me of a Daimler SP250...

Seems to me that MINI has lost the plot and have strayed too far from the integral ethos of the design, with beefcake bodybuilding and cartoonish leitmotifs, almost as if it seems to me to be a parody. I mean cheeky is good 'n all, but there's a fine line between cheeky and cheesy.

Amongst many other goofy things, the bollix Mission Control gimmick is almost unforgivable.
