Hey all,

I am looking for the best way to hookup my iphone to my stock radio in my r53 2006. I am not trying to make calls or anything I am just looking to listen to music with a mini jack stereo wire or simular. I was wondering if there is a kit or anything that I can add a aux jack to the stock radio, how it sounds, and where to get it? Thanks in advance!

 

There is an OEM aux in jack kit for about $30
Simple, and it works.
Only minus (for some), you cannot use it with the factory CD changer that some have in the trunk...
Install is simple...reach behind the radio...unplug the harness for the CD changer prewire, the plug in the aux kit...find a spot, mount the plug in the car...some use the down tube, some under the radio console in the middle, some the glove box...then buy a double ended (both male) micro headset jack of the length you want...and you are good to go.

 

I added it to my 06 and it works great. Check the glove box, some had it from the factory.

Check Way Motorworks or Outmotoring.com. I'm pretty sure they carry the Aux Jack hookup.

 

Just reach around the back and plug it in easiest mod, wish I had done it a lot sooner than i did.

Just unplug the factory cd changer and plug this in, run the wire how you want and done. It charges your phone also and allows you to use the factory controls on the steering wheel

 

On the advice of some on this forum and /r/MINI over on Reddit, we purchased an Aux-in kit from ECS Tuning for about $35, and then we bought a Kinovo BTC45 bluetooth adapter from Amazon (about $40). As long as you are using one phone to connect to the adapter and aren't sharing a car (we are), the adapter works really well with our iPhones.

And the install of the aux-in was really easy, just remove the knee bolster, reach behind the radio and plug it in then thread the wires through to wherever you are going to attach it. We keep the bluetooth in the relatively unused cupholder, we haven't hooked it up to the car although it has a microphone and you can therefore use it to make phone calls.

It's a bluetooth adapter that will plug into the Aux port. You don't have to fuss with wiring, and last several hours.

 

Thanks for the MINI Aux in purchase. The nice thing about the aux input is you can install it anywhere the cable can reach, most popular are under the toggle bank or in the glove box. ( typo )

So correct me if Im wrong, but even the BT modules have to also plug into the AUX 1/8"?

Or are there BT that stream digitally?

 

When you have a factory radio that doesn't stream in bluetooth, how do you think you get the sound from your phone into the radio? You either need to replace the radio itself, or do like we've done... get an aux-in port and then plug in a bluetooth adapter.

There is no plug going from the phone to the adapter, so it is streaming wirelessly, but the adapter does plug into the aux-in port *and* it requires power, so it also plugs into the 12v power supply/cigarette lighter.

 

I see you've already ordered one but (for anyone else who's looking into this) it's actually pretty easy to make your own. Before I went to an aftermarket head unit, I made my own aux cable by wiring into the existing harness for the CD changer. I never planned on getting a CD changer anyway, so I didn't mind splicing into it. All it took was a spare aux cable and a couple of resistors from Radio Shack. Then all you gotta do is hook it up and then the "AUX" option appears in the head unit. Pretty cool!

 

I have an aux in port.
I'm presuming since the OEM MINI iPhone cable uses USB for the info, and the aux port for the audio, that putting a BT/USB module on the car's USB port won't work.

The MINI 30 pin cable works on my iPhone, and shows it as an iPod.

I have a GROM audio kit.

It plugs into the cd changer port, software upgradable via USB port, USB port for audio, Bluetooth option, text display, steering wheel controls, Siri function

Definite upgrades:
30 pin to lightening cable
8 pin mini din extension cable 6ft

 

This may be late, but the guy before me did a aux and it died? I installed a new head unit. I'd recommend doing so too... I have no stock audio in my car now and it is sooo loud. The stock head unit could only do so much. I did want to keep the stock look since it does not appear I have a decently expensive setup. But still, if you want to listen to music properly, new head unit.
