NM Eng/GP2 Bilstein Coilover Kit

Has anyone used installed this coilover kit from NM Engineering?
  • Price: $1,102.50

BILSTEIN GP2 Coilover Kit - NM Spec
The Bilstein kit features both coilover and standard monotube gas shocks with performance-level valving, with application specific, progressive rate coil springs. The solid aluminum spring seat and lock nut allows for precise adjustment of the vehicle's lowered ride height from 30mm to 50mm, even while installed. Bilstein's patented Triple-C-Technology coating ensures long-lasting resistance to corrosion. This kit is ideal for the driver looking to set a car's ride height for both looks and performance.
This kit is similar to what the GP2s come with, but we special ordered it with lower rear spring rates for more comfortable street application as well as track when paired with our 22mm sway bar – perfect setup for anyone looking for the 'STANCE' look!

I thought I would add a link to the NM Eng page:
http://www.nm-eng.com/47139060-nm-en...kit.html#popUp[products]/0/

and I thought I would also add this link for comparison...ecstuning has the MINI JCW GP2 suspension.
http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/Gp2_Coilover/ES2730363/

I wonder what the difference in price is other than the MINI markup.

I guess it would be worth adding that, for the JCW GP2 setup, the front springs are marked "70 N/mm" which works out to be 400 lbs/in. Can't really read what is on the rear springs for a spring rate. Anyone know?

They are actually 2 different set ups. The NM set up is actually the B14 Coilover set up that is available for any car and not MINI specific. If you look at the NM part # it matches the Part number for the B14 coilover set.

See ECS here: http://www.ecstuning.com/Mini-2007-C...ers/ES2717985/

If you look at the Mfg Part# you will see it matches the NM part #.

The GP2 set up on ECS is the Actuall set up that is installed on the GP. Its specifically built for the GP2

Hey thanks for the information! I am trying to solve an ongoing issue with my GP2. The front struts have failed and been replaced twice under warrantee. Now I am at 73K miles and they are knocking again. Is it typical for these kinds of struts to wear out so quickly?

1. I'm thinking of buying replacement struts/shocks (not the whole kit) and sending the old ones to Bilstein to be refurbished for next time.

2. If there is such a thing, find alternate struts/shocks with equal or better performance that last longer. Adjustable damping would be great.

Thoughts or recommendations?

Bilstein makes a very good shock. It is unusual to hear about problems with them. Are they bottoming out a lot on the roads you drive on?

As for buying just the shock portion of a coilover setup, you might need to look at a high end manufacturer like AST or Ohlins.

Not unusual for the ones in the GP. Most os the front ones failed.

Have you asked this same question in the Gen2 area? Remember we are the old and slow supercharger folks (NOT).

Ooops! I saw GP2 coilover and (wrongly) assumed it was a GP2 thread. THat's what I get for not checking my surroundings!

PS: I sure miss that supercharger whine!

They aren't bottoming out at all and still feel firm. They are starting to sound clunky. It has happened twice before. The first time, the tech suspected loose connections and torqued some bolts. Still clunky. Next, the springs were suspected. When they went to replace the springs they found that the struts had lateral play so ordered new struts. The second time, they went straight to strut replacement. Problem solved. Now that it's happening again, I am looking for a solution that has a longer lifespan. I'll explore the Ohlin and AST offerings. Thanks!
