R50/53 Let's Play "Name That Noise!"
Let's Play "Name That Noise!"
Hello Everyone. I've just got my Valve Body fixed up, as mentioned in this thread, and now a new problem arose. I've got a noise. It was there before the Valve Body Rebuild, but it's now getting noisier, and fast. I've only put on a few hundred miles, and it's getting louder each drive I take.
Previous owner claims new transmission, but I could never get paperwork. It does appear to have been replaced as it looks much cleaner than the rest of the vehicle and there are other telltale signs (Bolts, and other things not quite stock). But, since the Valve Body and now this noise exist, I'm thinking it was a wrecking yard trans that was cleaned up.
It seems loudest in the area circled in red (Using Stick to Ear):

Does anyone recognize the sound? Thank you for your help!

"Listen to your MINI. Noises ranging from rumbling at a stop in gear to knocking noises while moving from a stop are both signs the transmission belt is starting to separate."
That was quoted from some of the info I came upon when looking into problem CVT'S. Don't remember where I copied it from but I remember it saying that the CVT belt could be replaced?, which didn't apply to the problem I was having then.

Also, the noise appears to be lower than the belt, IF I'm hearing it right.
Does a Torsion Plate make this sound? I heard it makes a sound when it goes out, but I have never heard one before.
Again, thank you very much for your ideas. Please keep em coming....
Since it only makes the sound when you're moving, I think the output bearing is a likely culprit. Sounds like it might be this bearing that there was a service bulletin about:

The only thing that makes me second guess the output bearing is your mentioning that it is affected by RPM. You are you sure it is affected RPM and speed? Have you tested same speed, but different gears using manual mode?

Yes, when I rev the motor ONLY when moving, the sound changes. It speeds up slightly and slows down slightly when I let off gas. But, the Average speed of the sound stays at the speed of the vehicle. The faster I'm moving, the faster the sound is. I don't understand the slight change in sound, other than maybe it's the clutch allowing it to change speed slightly??? I'm definitely NOT a transmission guy, so totally guessing.
Thank you very much for that link.
Now, to find out if I can actually buy that bearing and seals.
