I know it can be coded out and I remember seeing someone made a cable to bypass it.

What exactly do you mean by "messed with" it?

There have been threads on the topic: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourcei...anmotoring.com

I was thinking of altering it. Everything I can find on it is either making fun of it or just turning it off - why not grab the sound profile off an M3 or something? I'd figure you'd just need a program and some proprietary cable to do it. Am I far off on this?

If you wanted your car to sound like an M3, why not buy one? MINIs should sound like... MINIs.

You want to make it sound like an M3? Go big or go home! Make it sound like a Lamborghini V10.

There was talk in a few BMW forums about altering the Active Sound module to sound like other BMWs that also have the ASD, but I doubt you can apply any of that to MINIs. The MINIs use a different ASD module than the BMWs use and there's not a way to "add" the sounds to it. From what it sounds like, the same BMW ASD module is used in multiple BMW models like the M235i, the M3, etc and hence already have those sounds programmed in. It's just a matter of going into ESYS and telling the ASD module your car is a M235i instead of a 228i.

Search for ASD BMW on youtube and you'll see a few examples. I think it takes a subtle complementary sound and makes it VERY apparent and fake.
