Looking for JCW owners who have swapped out their stock exhaust

Hi,

The stock exhaust on my 2013 R56 JCW, sounds great. Pops like crazy after it gets warm. However, with the top open and windows down, I hear nothing.

I am wondering what those of you have gone to with swapping out your exhaust (not interested in simply doing a resonator delete with stock exhaust). Any power gain is welcome, of course, but not really expecting a seat-of-the-pants increase. What I'm really looking is a higher volume of sound.

I searched in the JCW Garage area on "exhaust" and didn't locate a thread that specifically talks about this...

I am hoping to hear quite a few at MOTD, but any thoughts on your experience would be helpful. I am looking for a downpipe-back system and so far, this is what I have found:

Milltek
Alta
Borla
nm Engineering
Akrapovic

thanks!

Delete the second cat and resonator. You'll have plenty of pops, I did this to my MCS but same sound since I got the FJCW exhaust on. I had a magnaflow and I quickly regretted getting that system for my MINI. Sound was okay but I primarily did it for the exhaust flow. If you go any aftermarket, go with the Akrapovic, very nice system IMO.

I swapped my stock exhaust for Alta's downpipe back exhaust, and I had the resonator removed and replaced with a custom straight pipe. I paired it with AR's 3" downpipe and the accessport.

The sound is insanely loud, especially on roadtrips, but it's worth it.

I too seek feedback on JCW exhaust mods. I have a E45 turbo on my 09 R56 and feel I could benefit from a 3" system. Looking at the ALTA system. Any other folks make the switch?

I would go a 2.5" system. Even with a hybrid turbo I wouldn't go with that big of an exhaust system since you'll just lose a lot of torque. Just my recommendation, good luck with whatever you decide.

I also have a 2013 JCW hardtop and find the exhaust to tame for my liking.
I came from a 2004 VW R32, I miss the exhaust sound so much!

I just recently deleted my resonator on my JCW and it barley changed at all, so I too am looking to swap out my system for something louder.

The past few months, I have read and searched as much as I can find online on which system to go with, and I think Akrapovic is the way to go for me. It is quite tame in sound compared to some others, but the quality is topnotch and it looks so good. I will be pairing it with a catless down pipe.

Take off the catted DP and you'll find all sorts of music. I have that with my stock exhaust and it plenty loud. I'm wanting top end power so a 3" might make sense.
So may options makes us crazy but too little would also.

This isn't the case with turbo cars. They don't need backpressure like a NA motor does. The "best" exhaust for a turbo car from a performance perspective would be just a dump pipe. So bigger is always better with regards to exhaust piping diameter on turbo cars. However, the mini is unlikely to flow enough air to need anything much more than a 2.5" diameter exhaust. The Evo/STI crowd commonly uses 3" downpipes/exhausts and they have a lot more volume of air to flow through the exhaust.

That may be true but learning in my engine classes back in the day, my professor and I always talked about exhausts since everyone loves loud;-), that with a smaller turbo there is gonna be increase in HP in the top end if that is what folks want. But also you'll lose torque as well going to a 3" piping. I would know as I've played around with exhausts on this car. You're comparing apples to oranges with Evos/STi's/ect. Everyone knows no gains come of the exhaust on a MINI, only the catless DP(2.5-3") will do any improvements besides the tune and FMIC. I'm just saying that there's no point to going that big on these little 1.6L. But on other cars I would with STs, MS3, Golf-R, WRX, and so on.

2013 R60 JCW Pops?

[QUOTE=Z06_Pilot;3919314]Hi,

The stock exhaust on my 2013 R56 JCW, sounds great. Pops like crazy after it gets warm. However, with the top open and windows down, I hear nothing.

Question to Z06_Pilot - Does your 2013 JCW Countryman pops in sport mode?
I have the 2013 JCW Countryman and it is very quiet. Nothing at all.

Thanks

I cut this much out of my R58 JCW Exhaust, the resonator and 2nd Catalytic. It sounds very good, louder but not unbearable. I would say tasteful. After talking with a lot of vendors at the Dragon, they recommended no downpipe, it causes more problems than it's worth and is very noisy

Hey Doz,

every now and then I will get a burble and even less of the time, a pop. From everything I have read, Mini tuned it out for North American Paceman and Countryman models. Probably didn't want the target audience of soccer moms and dads taking them to the dealer complaining of backfiring..

The European models pop like crazy. There's a couple of youtube videos of European CM's in sport mode, revving the motor and it sounds like my JCW stock exhaust-wonderful!

had a long conversation with Aaron of Outmotoring at MOTD and decided on the Alta downpipe-back JCW exhaust.

Ordered it this past Monday...

Do you think it will help with getting the pop and purrples back. Let's us know how it turns out.

It seems like it is in the ECU tune and nothing we can do about it? I will ask to see if my dealer come back with any suggestions.

Anyone have a better ideas please let us know.

Thanks.

Doz

ALTA Burble and Pop

Funny how some folks like and some dislike burble and pop.
That is by design and is enhanced when the sport button is activated.
Having experience in engine building although none in tuning, I wonder what parameter they change in DME to allow this to happen? More air, generally leaning caused popping in the old days or a small exhaust leak or intake leak.??? I can tell you I wen to a catless DP and the burble and pop are greatly enhanced almost to a back fire with sport mode on. Just my worthless .2c!!

SInce I just ordered the ALTA JCW 3" pipe I wonder what wisdom was imparted to you if u care to share

Thanks

Ah, well, the Alta is going on my R56 JCW, not my R60 JCW. I think you are correct. I have heard and read numerous times that the pop and overrun sounds were tuned out of the US Countryman JCW's. Our's will fire one off every now and then.

My R56 stock JCW exhaust pops and bellows to beat the band. The guys at Alta told me that is only enhanced with their exhaust

My 2014 JCW is pretty quiet in Sport mode. It doesn't sound much different than my 2007 MCS, and I wear hearing aids. I hear no "burble" at all. To tigerwong 58 who cut out some, what did you replace the piece with?

hmmm, that is odd. my 2013 R56 JCW pops and burbles to be the band with the stock JCW exhaust in SPORT mode.

Since I installed the Alta exhaust, the symphony of sounds is only amplified

I replaced it with a straight pipe. I posted a video of the sounds on Facebook in the MINI Coupe page

My 2013 R56 JCW used to pop and gurgle a little, just enough to make you hungry for more, but since I took it to the dealer last week I have noticed almost zero pop and gurgle, and I feel a slight decline in power. I took it to get the cooling fan checked out. It's all got me a little flabbergasted.

My 2013 JCW also gives a light to moderate melody of pops and burble during the overrun, but if I give the gas pedal a little blip at the beginning of overrun, then it sounds like a loud BANG! It's ear-popping delicious!

I left the 2nd cat and resonator and removed the muffler. I think it sounds great!

Current project for my '13 JCW is the replacement of the rear muffler with an Edelbrock SDT unit with a single outlet. Deletion of the resonator. Splicing in a Jeg's electric cutout with the possibilty of a straight extension exiting on the right side near the front wheelwell. I'll let you know how this turns out if someone can give me a hint on how to get the sound into the computer.
