Windows and Doors opening by themselves?

Ok, my wife was driving our R50 and all of a sudden, the windows roll down, sun roof opens and doors unlock, close them all, and does it again, while driving, I drove the car, same thing. I changed the key battery with a new one, again same thing. I had the car parked, engine running, jiggled the key in the ignition, and that seems to cause the problem. Anybody else experience this? I also have one key, so I cant change them to see if it's the key or ignition doing this,

Sounds like you might have a defective drivers door lock actuator....If your handy try pulling the drivers door panel off and unplugging the drivers door lock actuator and see if that helps.

I don't see the connection. How does a defective door lock actuator cause those things to happen when jiggling the key in the ignition?

certainly could.. you can open and close the windows and roof with the key in the lock or unlock position, so how is it NOT connected?
the ignition switch may not be connected but the door latch certainly could be

Let's go from simple to complex:

1. Is your car still programmed so a long press on the key opens the sunroof/doors/windows? Did you change keyrings and is something pressing the key while it's in the ignition? (I actually had my car deprogrammed at the dealer so the windows/sunroof would NOT open with a long press of the key - since they were bumping open as I walked away from the car if I shoved my keys in my pocket and the key button got pressed. )

2. May actually be the key itself, not the ignition - does it do this with both keys, or only one?

3. Holding the key as steady as possible (to try to eliminate the key as a variable), maybe the ignition switch is shorting?

4. Since the driver's door key cylinder has a switch to allow windows up/down, maybe that's come adrift?

5. Could also be (gulp) the computer or key receiver getting wet or shorting.

Good luck!

1-Yes it is programmed to open with the long press,2 only have the one key, dont have the $350 for a second key yet,3 I'll give that a try, and I'm gonna undue the door switch this evening and see if that's the culprit, it did rain yesterday, so maybe something is getting wet, had the car for 3 weeks now and it started doing this yesterday, thanks for the reply

Okay, it's officially not the drivers door lock actuator, unplugged it and when i jiggle the key, it unlocks the doors and opens the windows.

Possibly a bad or loose button switch inside the key that is closing the contact and making it act like a long press.

The button switch can be replaced. Valvashon has documented repairing keys: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...rbishment.html

I actually ordered a key switch replacement, thanks for the link to change it, was wondering about the key part itself.
Well, found a solution, i think, i normally drive with the key in the ignition, buttons facing me, for ***** and giggles, i turned the key, buttons away from me, and walla, chit works fine, can't explain it, but i went around the block , switching back and forth and for some reason, it works fine facing away from me, gonna put some miles to test it, maybe the key is wore just a way to mess with the ignition, i dont know, but ill take it, ill keep you posted and thanks for all the help...

This is a very bizarre problem.

If you figure out what was causing it besides the direction of your key, then post it up!

As a sidenote: I didn't know I could open my windows with my key. Gonna have to try that!

Another update. Everything is still good when I drive the car, but it is definately the key. I was walking around the garage with the key in my pocket and then all of a sudden, the doors unlock and windows roll down, closed everything up, shook the key in my hand (outside the car), samethink, I just recently changed the fob so it's not that. The problem was it the og fob also, dont know if the unlock button is stuck or sensitive or what, but now i know where to look further..

Sounds like you could REMOVE THE BATTERY from the key....and open the door manualy...problem solved till you can buy a new key from the dealer.

I've "butt called" the windows open several times on my 03MSC. Usually during violent rain storms (that I notice) i.e. like Hurricane Frances several years ago here in Florida. Just finish drying the interior from the last incidence, 4 hours open in a driving rain storm.

It's similar to "butt dialing" a cell phone in your pocket. Ever find a phone call to Russia on your phone bill you probably sat on your phone and actuated it. "Butt Dialing" your windows open is the same thing. My solution leave my keys on the dining room table and only pick them up when I'm going to be driving the MINI. Now I just walk out the door without my car keys - don't get very far that way but my windows don't open during rain storms either.

You made me curious, so I tried pressing the buttons on my key, whilst it was in the ignition with the car running. Mine won't do anything until I remove the key from the ignition.
