Not from the outside, if that's what you're asking. From the inside, the first pull on the door lever.
To unlock manually
In the event of an electrical malfunction,
you can also unlock the tailgate manually.
1. Fold the rear seat bench upwards
2. Pull the ring.
The tailgate is unlocked.

oh didnt know that, but never noticed it before when i had the back seat up, will have to check again. but if passenger door is lock you cant unlock it?

If I recall, one of the "quirks" of the 2002 (that was fixed in later years) is the doors need battery power to operate fully...
Just kinda remember hearing something and thought "that's crazy" and my mechanic said something along the lines of...well, its a 2002...they have a TON of odd quirks..."
Goes back to the 2002 was basically a clean sheet design from 2 different design teams...some things that folks complained about got fixed later...
On 2003+ cars, just pull the interior handle 2x to open...but still no exterior key to manually unlock it....
2005+ cars, and any car "modified" by the dealer has a pull cable under the rear seat to open the trunk...just for the reason you are having...lets you open the trunk without battery power.
The modification is pretty easy if you want to DIY' it for future use.....just a drill a hole in the lower latch portion, and attach the cable, then run it, and leave it under the seat...
Just look at a car with the mod to find the right spot to drill the hole...maybe somebody can provide a pic...not sure I have ever seen one posted!!

From what I read some early models did not have the cable installed, I hope that your car does have it, I see that you have a 2002 so that could be the case, good luck

Was something unclear in my earlier post? Pull the (interior) door lever that a passenger would use to open the door, and it will unlock.
Yes,
I remember some early MINI not having the cord ? 2002- 2003
Here are some articles about it from back in the day.

They had to buy the cable kit. Best thing if you have early MINI is to check under the rear seat. It you don't have one list of parts can be done.
#29 & #30 plus some hardware.

Also there was an update to the part for also around that time:

It you need certain parts let me know. We are really going back in the day on this one !
Hope that helps.

nope dont have a pull ring. looks like ill have to rig something up. its not that hard to get to the battery any way i have the seats folded down so getting to the boot is easy.
Yea, That's what I figured:
What production month / year in your 2002? I find it very interesting that MINI did not have these in those early 2002- 2003 as it must have not been required yet by MINI for regulations.
Let me know if you want to add it , it looks like they were successful from the links with the retrofit so that way you have the option to have the emergency cable in the future.
Just make sure your older part has the loop to add it.

Then the lock mechanism is broken and it needs to be repaired. Driver and passenger doors work the same -- if the door is locked, first pull unlocks and second pull opens door.
I recall one of the "quirks" of the 02 was your exact issue...
think the lock was actually changed....a few folks with the early cars have t
he same issue
sure there is a post listing the 02 quirks.....

Locking is controlled by a different control module, not the ECU. 12v applied to the correct wires should allow the rear hatch to be unlocked, but I thought the issue was how to open it when no power is available.
i dont know i tought the same thing till the next day when i went to unlock the car and it didnt so i had to go thrioguh the drivers door in to the back and lift the tray and see battery was still good and it is. havent tryed putting the ecu back in yet though.
maybe over long periods of time it wont work, becasue i ahev locked and unlocked the car with the ecu out using the remote. but not waititng ttill the next day. it was always just maybe an hour.
Yup...here is a thread on it...was fixed with the double pull handles.....
My February 2003 MCS does not do this. I believe this double lock feature was disabled on 2003 and later MINI's. There is a Tech Memo indicating that the dealer can modify the lock to disable this feature. Check with your service advisor and have this dangerous feature deactivated.
Yup, the '03 and later builds have the double pull handles- you cannot lock yourself in. The early stories were pretty horrendous- folks stuck in the boonieis w/ dead batteries, unable to get out of their cars.
