R50/53 supercharger and Noise
supercharger and Noise
ok so i have installed a 15% craven-speed supercharger pulley on my 06 Mcs this past week and O my Whole new car.... but i have a slight concern, on removal of the old pulley i decided to rotate the supercharger to see what would happen and came across a very disturbing noise. of course i recorded it to see if anyone knew if it was normal as i am slightly concerned.
That doesn't sound quite right. Can you tell if the sound is coming from the front or the back? There is a nylon coupler in the front housing, and a gear PTO in the back. If I had to guess I'd say it was a sloppy nylon coupling, but it could also be play in the rotors.
Sounds louder in the back, is there anything I can do sould I be worried, can't really afford to put a supercharger on it.

Just checked a spare I have in the garage, and it does the same thing. Given that the SC doesn't reciprocate, I don't think it's an issue. It seemed to be a bit of slop in the gears of the lobes. Again, because it only spins one way, I don't think it's a problem. Will have to try that next time I remove my belt, though.
thanks for checking and yea when you do pull your belt off let me know im quite curious about this now, im trying to get my friend to let me change her pulley on her 08 convertible.

Tora,
The noise you are hearing is normal. There is quite a bit of play (or slack) between the SC PTO output shaft and the waterpump input shaft. If you hear a grinding noise or it feels "rough" as you turn the input pully, then you may have PTO gear damage. I've attached an excerpt from RealOEM showing the PTO output shaft. Sorry for the poor resolution. I hope this helps relieve your fears!

ok that relives some fear, i know you can check the oil level in the supercharger as well, and theres two spots, is there anyway to check it (easy way) with out removing the water pump? cause my other fear is that its goin go dry and blow apart....
