iPad car-dock suggestions

Me and the boyfriend are looking at buying an iPad for the car :D
We looked at some of the suggestions for mounting it to the car, but it's not quite what we are looking for.

http://youtu.be/XpuE1g2X-CM

That video however is essenetially what we want.

I'm looking for suggestions as to where to place it, without actually getting rid of the speedometer. I've an R53.

I was thinking move stereo out of there...move climate control up to where stereo used to be move windows and stuff further down? I will try to photoshop this before work. Give me ideas!
Edit, rough rough rough sketch of what I'm talking about, I don't even know if it will fit considering ipad1 is almost 10 inches wide! and ipad2 is 9 I think. I haven't measured the console width yet.

just curious, because i've seen posts about ipad mounting in the cars..why? unless it's to be used by a passenger (in that case, can't the passenger just hold it? lol), I don't see why one would want to have an ipad in their vehicle, for the driver, distraction+temptation=accident. Just my opinion.

The post that you want to mount it will be extremely difficult to do. Not only because of the size of the Ipad, but also because of the controls for the air. There is a lot more going on back there than just wires. There are controls that would have to be modified to let the air controls still function properly.

Xnotfunkylex hit the nail on the head. That install with re-positioning everything will turn into a nightmare. It can be done but I wouldn't want to pay for it.

I would recommend this if you want a touch screen that is Ipad, Iphone compatible.

I run one of these in my Mini. it does block the fuel and temp gauge. so you will need to think about that. I use a scangauge to tell me the water temp and how many miles till empty.

Hmm, a decent alternative, but not quite what I'm looking for, as for the size, you are right haha, it's a little bigger, which makes me wonder. If I were to create a dock, and mount it over the stereo, without actually modifying anything and use the 30 and 20 torque to hold it up (like the cup holder) and paint it to match etc etc, it'd be much easier removeable and I would still have an ipad.

As for why? well, its a good gps. movies and music is much simpler. I have an android tablet, and I'll have to say ipad is much more fun to own and easier to work with. And well, facetime haha.

That sounds like a much better way to mount the ipad. Something to note also is that you may want to make the back of the ipad holder as open as possible so that you can still get to all of the controls when the ipad is not in there.

For all of the reasons above, this seems like such an uncommonly bad idea. I can almost get behind the easier music access, but the fact that you mention movies. Yeah. Bit terrifying really.

However - free market to the rescue - there's quit a lot of discussion about this in the Countryman forum since the car comes with the accessory rail etc. Turns out, there's a dash mount in production:

Movies during hour breaks and there is nothing to do :P I wouldn't watch a movie/tv shows while driving, that's silly.

Music, and GPS, along with the ability to have one device to take care of everything in between my home, my work, and my car. I mean I've ipod touch and its the same thing almost, but ipad makes it totally worth it because of screen size, and android tablets just can't compare, so no point in making a mount for the tablet i've now.

Does anyone know any forums, or any tutorials on how to work with fiberglass, resin or whatever? This project might be fun if the bf buys me an ipad for my bday :D

there's a youtube video of "the first ipad installed in a car" they put it in what looks like a Camery, they molded theirs into the dash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSnIXfoSU6I

your best bet is probably mounting it where you have it in the photoshopped picture, and have it swing on the cupholder mount (attached to an ipod case) over your radio/ac console

I was thinking about this, except I will put a bracket between the stereo and the plastic "pillar" that makes an l shape, then just have snap on brackets. probably laptop brackets, those are super sturdy. I'll be getting an ipad in a month or so, so we'll see. I'll post pics of the end result.
