Ok, it's actually three questions and only two have to do with wheels.

First

What do you guys think of Rota Slipstreams http://www.fastmini.net/rotaslipstream.html?
Cristina wants something white to match the roof and mirrors and I want something that won't skimp on the acceleration or handling.

Second

What size?
I have 17's right now and think I'm gonna stay with that because I don't want to have to re-calibrate the speedometer (correct me if I'm wrong on this).

Third

I need experience.
Any of you guys that do your own work on your MINI's would you mind if I poked around while you're working, whether to be an observer of a gopher? I have the technical knowledge I just need the hands-on experience.

Congrats on the mini ( I'm guessing )

First - nice pick on the rims - get what you both want - you can always powder coat them

here is what we went with don't follow the crowd - go your own road

second - we went with 18's and 215/35's it can be a stiff ride but cornering is outstanding (we drive from Aspen Park/Conifer to Denver every day) The 18's may be stiffer then you want though

Third - I do my own work and always welcome helpers/ observers - recently did my own cam, header, injectors - had a few minor issues but the end result was sweet

You shouldcome down to the Colorado Springs DIY session. You can view many different projects going on.

You dont have to calibrate the speedo. If you go from 17 to 16 the aspect ratio of the tires will get higher and you will end up keeping the same overall tire/wheel combo diameter.

I strongly recommend 16"s. I have owned many different brand and size rims including s-lites, sport editions, Team dynamics racing, OZ etc.

16" are great because they are lighter. The tires that you will put on the car will have taller shoulders thus more comfortable ride. And trust me you wont loose handling performance that is going to make a difference on the streets.

I have nothing but great raves about Team Dynamics racing. Available in many sizes and colors through outmotoring.com. I own a set of 17" white prorace 1.2 and a set of 16" silver for racing.

Like the guys said a good choice on wheels. You can do 17s or 18s and not mess with the speedo. The MINI speedo though is off by 3 to 5 MPH even with a stock size tire of 205/45r17 for the 17s. If you are worried about the speedo, stay with the 17s and get a 215/45r17 (RUDEBOX has this size) which will make the MINI speedo about 98% correct. You will loose a little acceleration but be correct on the speedo. If you want a little better acceleration and better cornering you can do like I did on BLU-BY-U and go with 215/40r17, I can feel a difference between RUDEBOX and BLU-BY-U in cornering. I would also recommend hitting the Springs event for eyes on knowledge and just stick your head in where possible.

P.S. if you plan on taking the MINI to the track stay with 17s
