A hole into the cowl area

Hi there, i have my standard airbox and everything still intact, i was thinking of cutting a hole into the cowl area at the bottom of the box, i was wondering if this would make the whine of the supercharger (intake sound) slightly louder? thats more what im after.. for the time being. Has this been done before?

it makes the whine louder?? have you done this before?
also is there a considerable difference over the hole into the cowl area vs non-holed cowl area with regards to a stock airbox?

last question...can a cone filter be inserted into the stock airbox?

Did it on mine, its noticeably louder, but not aftermarket intake loud, I also put in an Alta drop in at the same time so I am unsure if it made the car faster, throttle response seemed better, and smoothness during full throttle.

1) Virtually every aftermarket CAI access the cowel area.
2) you could swap the drop in w/ a cone BUT you would want to ensure that the cone would provide equal or greater air than the drop in.

You really need to search there are TONS of CAI discussions.

have tried the search function, and did pop across that link you posted after i posted this thread.. also never came across whereby someone fitted a cone directly into the stock airbox..(standard size cone filter)
would it be too high, causing the lid not to close properly?

i was thinking of something like this, just to drop a K & N cone in and being able to put the lid back on again. After reading the instructions, i saw that the lid doesnt go back on..

anyone shed some light on this?

No name change . I've been batrugger on here since 05. That was the DIY I used on the wife's car shortly after we bought it.

Keep the airbox sealed and use a K&N drop in or Alta drop in filter and the holes at the bottom/back of the box. An open box top will just suck in hot air from the engine and nulligate most of the beneficial effects.

Sorry, this was a misunderstanding, I meant from MCO to NAM. Randy was helping out back then with his how to's.

That was the DIY I used too!

hence i stated that i was finding out if was possible to attach a cone directly onto the box and put the lid back on without any spaces/gaps. Like a DIY JCW intake..

I never found one that would fit in the box that I had on hand and wasn't willing to buy more. I like my current modified OEM box setup, see my gallery for pictures.

Very nice. I like your focus on air management plus its clean. What filter are you running?

Thanks, that's a OEM/WIX brand paper filter. The white PVC pipe is sealed at the cowl area into an enlarged hole, it is as large as possible without interfering with the filter element.
The only slight draw back is I can't hear the supercharger scream like my first DIY intake with K&N cone.
The engine has no problem getting all the air it needs with this rig.

i think that i would do next..

so today i decided to take my intake apart, to my suprize, the filter was pitch black, it look as if it couldnt get more dirter as it was. Im disgusted by BMW, as my last service, which was about 5000km ago, they told me they changed it :O , theres no way it could of gotten that dirty...

i bought me the k&n drop in, and it immediatly felt better because of the previous filter having so much of dirt on it..

I just have 2 questions:

1) I noticed a small hole at the back already, why has MINI made the hole that small??

2) the silver clamps (one on the hose where the hose connects the filter box & one on throttle the hose which connects to the throttle body), i cant seem to get them to close tightly..i tried puling it over but its just not reaching the "clip" area, just short of it. can anyone shed some light as to how i can clip it close again?

thanks..

It requires a special tool. Just go to the auto parts store and get some regular clamps that you can screw on and trash those old ones.

Is there a place where you can purchase a new cowl, if you cut into the stock one, if you ever want to switch back?
