WMW or M7 heat shield, please advise
Hey Guys I need an advise.
I've read a bunch of threads and still can't make up my mind.
Which turbo heat shield I should go with?
The two popular options are either the Way Motor Works
http://www.waymotorworks.com/product...1&cat=0&page=3
or the M7 Heat Shield?
http://www.m7tuning.com/parts/produc...roducts_id=137
I know M7 looks better, but it will also attract attention of the dealer when doing service or any warranty work.
Also, I read threads that say they had some overheating and suspect m7 heat shield to be the cause.
I also read about some sort of rubbing of the m7 with the bonnet.
Just want to know what do you guys have and what has been your experience, or if you have any pros/cons for either one of the two heat shields
As always thanks all
Eugene

I own the m7 AGS-R setup which inculdes the m7 heat shield...I would go with the WMW and I am going to purchase soon.
The m7 doesn't fit just right and and when it moves around, it rattles...the WMW seems like a much better alternative when it comes to heatwraps.

But it is a whole lot more fun to install. Hope you have small hands. That is why I have the M7.
FYI, many racing stores also have univeral turbo wraps for about 1/2 the price of WMW.
Forgot to mention, the M7 rubbing was from the very early versions. Seems like it is not a problem with the current version.
I remember an overheating thread for the M7 but I thought that was caused by ice? Is there another one?

Thats not a bad idea...

Understand fully. I am always concerned with universal fits as well. I think some things maybe OK. I have not tried it myself so I cannot tell based on my experience. But some friends with dedicated track cars like it so I mention it.

Does any one know if there is a write up somewhere on how to install the WMW wrap?
if any one has pictures it would be great as well.
WMW wrap
The wrap is easy - pull off the factory tin heat shield, fit wrap to turbo, use included wire to secure in place by looping through the buckles on the outside of the wrap and behind/under the turbo, be sure that wrap does not interfere with gate levers or shaft, re-install tin cover.
There is limited space to work and you must get under the car to do this properly. I also used heat wrap on my down pipe, it is significantly cooler under my bonnet now.
The M7 is really a shield designed to beep the heat off the hood, not in the turbo as the wrap does.

I know this may be a noob question, but I don't fully understand the workings of turbos (then again, who does?). So, I ask, what is the advantage/effect of keeping the heat in the turbo? Other than it not melting the hood I guess.
I believe the desired effect is to keep the gases hot, and therefore moving quicker. The faster the gases travel, means the faster the turbo spools.
but i'm by no means an expert.

Was not easy to find since you were not the one who started the thread and it does not have a DIY in the title.Wow great write up and pictures
I think you should pull it out as a separate thread and make it a sticky
One last newby question: what is and where is the 02 sensor?
A picture would be appreciated
EDIT: Also, while we are on the subject, did anyone notice quicker spool by chance? It probably wouldn't be all that noticeable, but, I'm curious.

Ok, ordered and received the turbo wrap.
Can some one tell me what size O2 sensor socket I need and where is a good place to get it.
I googled O2 sensor socket and everything comes up 7/8 of an inch
What size is the mini one since it's metric.

Go to discount auto parts, get an o2 socket tool. They'll know what you're talking about. It has a hole cut in it so the wire can get through and you're not pinching anything. They're a standard size IIRC.
O2 socket
22MM/7/8". They are one-in-the-same

The main point is that the turbo is like a BLT...you want to keep the hot side, hot and the cool side, cool.
But, the question above raises a good point...does anyone have any quantitative performance data? Seems like for $200, we should be asking that question...or at least ask, what is the real benefit (no burnt hands)?
Also, aside from the $, we should be assessing the risk. I know of cars that have had turbo wraps, that ultimately warped the cylinder heads because the heat was not convected, but rather conducted through the turbo and exhaust manifold, to the head.
Of course, I've not heard of this happening on Mini's. But, in theory, this could happen to us too.
Anyway, I'm not one to trash our vendors. But, I guess I'm asking those who have this mod what their (direct) experience/data is on performance/reliability (indirect would be under hood temp)...Butt-dyno results at least? Water temp measurements? Pyrometer measurements?
I'm interested in doing this mod. I know people have been doing it for years on turbo cars. But, I'm not sure what the benefit is on the R56.
