Tire Monitoring System?

If I were to replace my oem wheels with aftermarket and NOT transfer the TPMS over to my new wheels will the light on the dash stay on or simply stay off by not detecting the sensors?

Sorry Im sure its been covered.

The tire pressure system has nothing to do with the wheels you have. It is on the axle, and measures the speed differential between wheels.

Ahh got ya. I read that somewhere but sensors in the wheels had been mentioned in the same thread.

Thank you for the fast answer.

If you have an 07+ you have sensors in the wheels, and most wheels will accept the sensors. If it's 06 or older you just have the speed sensors.

Exactly. Gen 1's use the rotation off the ABS system I believe.

I believe it's a battery.

If it's like my husband's '98 Corvette, the sensors are powered by lithium batteries inside the sensors. His are still working after 10 years!

For the record, the system changed sometime mid 07 model year. I got my 07 in late Aug and I got the 'old' system....no sensors, just the wheel speed differential.....

So if I understand correctly, on my 2003 Mini, all the system does is let me know when the pressure is not the same in the 4 wheels. If that is the case, why do we have to reset the system when we change the tire pressure?

because the sensor works on rotations... if one wheel is lower on pressure then it's overall radius is smaller than the others causing it to rotate faster than the other wheels which in turn triggers the system.

So watch out for those false readings. I get them quite often coming off exit ramps.

TPMS??

I have an 07 MCS. We just replaced the OEM wheels with aftermarket and drove to NY from AL and back, I'm concerned (relieved) because my TPMS never has came on, except at start up. Any ideas why it hasn't come on?

They took the sensors off your OEM wheels and put them on the aftermarket wheels.

TPMS??

Nah, the OEMs w/TPMS are sitting in the garage. I ordered a wheel/tire package from Wheelfire.com. I'll be due a service soon, we'll see. I'll call the dealer tomorrow and ask them.

like I said...an 07 might not have the 'active' tpms system depending on the build date. My 07 S has the same system as the GEN1....no sensors in the wheels. The change happened sometime after mine was shipped...

take a look at your valve stems, are they silver with a GIANT cap that says "TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM"? or are they black rubber?

I, too, would like to know if I replace my wheel and tires on my '08 S will a warning light stay on in the dash? I would prefer not to spend $200 on new sensors. I wouldn't mind seeing a warning at start-up. But if it is a light that stays on and interferes with the function of the car computer functions I may not be so keen on putting up with it.

Does anyone know what will happen if there are no TPMS sensors in a set of wheels?

TPMS

I haven't had a chance to take the car to Nashville, (85 miles) we drove to NY and back and the light still has only come on with the initial start up. I talked to the dealer before I left about swapping the monitors when I get back but since I'm so close to a service might as well wait.
