Rattling clutch/flywheel?

I have an 03 MCS and when in i let the clutch out quickly in neutral, i get this rattling noise from the drivers side of the engine...i took it to get looked at and had the clutch and flywheel replaced. Noise never went completely away but its back again and just as noisy as before. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Do i need an upgraded clutch or something? I want to go to Jan and get the famous RMW head but i need this taken care of first...Thanks

Sounds like you've simply got some clutch chatter. This is normal, and may be louder in some cars compared to others. It can be annoying, but as long as your clutch isn't slipping you'll be alright.

Mine does it a little too. I wouldn't worry about it. I think it's due to back lash from the flywheel. My M3 did this too with a light flywheel. The alternative is a heavy double sprung flywheel and we don't want that.

I had this on my '06 MCS. My dealer took care of it because I was still under warranty.

They said something about the flywheel being dual mass and that the rattling comes from it being out of balance. I'm not sure if it actually needs replacing - my guess is that like Cruiser said above - as long as it's not slipping - you'll be fine.

My flywheel chatters in any gear, any speed, and at any load. It's the stock dual mass flywheel btw. The amount of clutch slip is within specified design paramiters.

If the noise comes in neutral, and usually when you let the clutch out quickly (and much less frequently that if you let the clutch out slowly) it's probably the throwout bearing, and it should be fine. It's been discussed here before - some people recommend that it should be fixed, but others say it's fine. Mine's been fine for 20,000 miles so far.

My car has had this rattling through 3 different throwout bearings now, so I doubt it is that.

hmm. i took my car back to the tranny shop and he said it could be my transmission bearings and said nobody sells the bearings individually, a whole new tranny must be bought...does anyone else think this noise is the tranny bearings? Thanks for the responses
