Cold air intakes?

Does anyone make any type of cold air intake or has anyone done it? I have looked for something on it and I just can't find anything. Anyone know?

An intake?

does the concept of an intake apply to a carb? I agree, I've never seen an actual CAI for a basic Mini setup.

I guess that on an SU setup the equivilent is removing the stock airfilters and replacing with a cone...which is what's on the end of a CAI....

Here's what was on my 79 when I got it

Note that making this change and increasing the airflow means you also need to change the needle on an SU carb so you want to discuss the particulars of your setup with the vendor.

Yeah, I've seen the cone filters, but they still pick up the heat under the bonnet. I'm looking for something to direct just a little more cold air straight to the carb. Looks like I might have to make something myself.

food for thought

just some idle thinking on the topic but the Mini really has pretty good airflow..as long as it is moving ....I mean what's getting in the way?

If I look at my Miata and the cramped engine compartment the potential for a well routed CAI is there. I mean how does any air get to the stock intake....thru the radiator, around the engine ... everything you are worried about.

But on a classic....well, there's nothing between the grill and the engine so tons of air flow. True the stock setup is drawing from the back but there's a ton of air getting in there, if you're moving. Which causes me to restate a common booboo. The fan should be pushing air OUT thru the rad' ... not pulling air is as with virtually every other car. All this works to pull a ton of air thru.

And then I guess my setup carries this a step farther. I've a plastic front clip and no inner fenders....I got air flow out the wazzoo. I'm not sure any ducting would help. (pic with the clip removed...not much to impede airflow here!)

If a stock setup were going for more air dumped to the cone filter, a simple scoop on the bonnet would suffice. I can't say I've seen that on a 'stock' engine tho....some farther out there mods maybe.

Anyone have pics of the early rally cars under-bonnet set up. I know there were ducts. Did they direct air to the carbs? Or just inside the car?

I've got a ram air hood on my mini that will allow cold air to my carb.

No prob...

back on topic.

Why doesnt someone try running a CAI to the front bumper (on the right seems logical) using some simple plastic piping. See if you get any performance boosts.

well, If I can ever come to get my own freakin mini I am definitely gonna try it. It seems like every time I try to find a mini the deal falls through for some reason or another either on my end or the other. But you guys have been really helpful here and I appreciate it, so when I try fabbing up a CAI, I will definitely let yall know how it works.
