The reason Dale Earnhardt Jr. sold his MINI

" 'Corners like a dream' One of the best-handling cars he's owned was a 2002 Mini Cooper, but Earnhardt said he didn't have that car long.
"They're so much fun to drive, but you just look goofy in them. I had one for a year and I sold it because I just couldn't bear to bring myself to drive it into town and let people see me in it.
"I've got this big monster-looking truck with big tires on it and I've got this Corvette and I'm going to drive into town in a Mini Cooper? I eventually sold it just so I wouldn't have to wrestle with it (any) more.""

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2007...-earnhardt-jr/

customized 270-horsepower Mini Cooper is officially on the block. Mini tuning house Mini Mania is responsible for the barrage of modifications to the car, which include upgrades to the computer, suspension, exhaust and more.

Any guy that rebuilds engines in his living room would probably feel that way. Besides it looked funny parked next to the double wide.

Than why did he get it in the first place...he was comfortable about it until his friends who probably started to rag on him about it and he gave in like a wimp.

I, for one, am not surprised at all. He's no different than the dudes with the jacked up trucks. You'd think somebody who races for a living (well, if you consider NASCAR really racing) would have more appreciation for a driver's vehicle. Oh well.

I am comfortable in my masculinity. Except when I'm partying with Xiek or chugging maple syrup.

Yeah. Because nobody looks goofy in a big monster-looking truck.

I'd buy it just because Dale Jr's butt touched it. And it's a sweet MINI.

Hey - the MINI life is not for everyone. If it were, would we enjoy it so much?

This car was for sale a year or two ago... did it not get sold the first time around, or is this a re-sale?

EDIT: My fault for not looking at the auction... the linked e-bay auction ended almost 2 years ago.

hey blimey- were you attempting to spell Zeke? And some actually wonder why they get tagged "snobs"? This attitude is exactly why F1 didn't come back. These are the people who think their better than everyone else, that if you don't understand us or agree with us than you must be stupid, ignorant or a red neck who shops at Wal-Mart. Why do we make fun of others? Outside of your Mini club who actually likes your car? Do you care that they don't like your cute little car? The guy (Jr.) runs in a different crowd. So what? He didn't say he didn't like the car, his friends made fun of him and he didn't want to deal with it. I don't blame him. Besides, do you know how much his All-American, Chevy, Wrangler image makes him in a minute? More than I'll make in a lifetime.

Yep, its an old auction but the article is 2007. Just the reason for why he sold it caught my attention. He also sold off his Corvette.

He said he makes more money selling off of Ebay...this is a guy that is worth 57 million plus but he wants to squeeze what he can for two cars that have a combined worth of about $50,000.

Thats the whole point. Peer pressure kicked his tail. Some people made fun of me but that didn't stop me...I didn't care .
Tack on a net worth of 60 million for Jr., why did he wimp out? Plus he claims to be a car collector.

Kind of a generalized statemant. I used to drive a 01 Chevrolet on 37's, and theres several other MINI owners on her into that kind of thing .

Yet another reason I'm not a fan of his. Sure I like F1, but I'm not so snobbish to not consider NASCAR real racing (because there truly is a very competitive aspect to it that takes both skill and endurance). But I do not think of Jr as any kind of enthusiast, otherwise he'd not have had to wrestle with what he looked like in the vehicle he wanted to drive. He should just stick with his large truck that more than likely never goes off-road, nor hauls anything, and maybe get one of those bright red Ferrari Convertibles with the giant yellow prancing horses on each fenders that the image conscious posers seem to be attracted to.

I personally love four-wheeling and responsible use of all-terrain vehicles. It's a great way to enjoy nature and takes a highly unique skill-set and a lot of discipline and patience. What bugs me is those people that put big tires and lifts on their trucks and then never take them off-road, or don't off-road at a level that necessitates that large a tire (like exploring improved fire-roads on 44" Interco TSLs while being followed by a stock Suzuki Samurai)

a nascar 'star' wouldn't have a real driver's car. I'm not a fan of nascar and i'm very open about that - A nascar driver doesn't really drive. Same with drag racers. This doesn't surprise me at all.
