Loud fan???

When I got home today, I turned off the car and I heard the fan click on. It was VERY loud. Is this normal? Thanks in advance.

I have an 03 and mine started doing that... But it wasn't normal. I went through 2 batteries before taking it to the dealer and finding the real problem. According to the dealer, the fan has 2 speeds. My low speed wasn't working. But the car thought the fan was on... So it would send power to the non-spinning fan until the engine cooled. Killed 2 batteries in a couple days.

It was kinda cool seeing everything the mechanics can do with there computers controlling the car. He turned the fan on low... just a click... high... it was fine. Then they pulled off the front of my car and changed the fan.

Just something to keep in mind if you need a jump for no obvious reason...

I have an 02 MCS and just had the fan replaced for that same reason. The low sensor went bad and only the high speed ran. Of course all the non Mini owners though it was the squirrels trying to escape........

That makes a lot of sense - thank you very much for your reply. I think I'll take my car back in so they can diagnose it.

hmmmmmmm...so let me get this straight, if I am constantly hearing the fan on high only (never any other speed), I should have it checked out?

Mine does the same. Had someone tell me the Temp sensor was bad and another said it was normal. Mine comes on in the summer when its REALLY hot outside (i live in Yuma az and Tucson +115 F) doesnt seem to kill the batt or any other problems. My car is Defiantly NOT under warranty. Should i replace the elec fan?

I just started having this happen yesterday, and it's not hot outside (40F this evening). I heard both high and low fan settings yesterday. I heard only the high setting this evening. I have a ScanGaugeII in my car, so I could see that the water temp was over 220F when I turned off the car. This is higher than it has normally been. Moreover, this has not been happening on every drive. I don't think my driving style has changed at all, but I did have recent brake work and I reset my ECU. What is going on?
