First just about every muffler manufacture makes "universal" mufflers so you don't need to go to Tokyo to pick them up. Regarding power - there is science behind exhaust systems so whatever you do will be a shot in the dark. If its a project your looking for then I would study the systems currently out there and attempt to replicate. Personally, I find a system that you like/can afford and go with that. New Catbacks start at 299 and you can always monitor the markplace for used one.

magnaflow and borla make great mufflers. not sure why you want to use a "japanese" muffler w/o considering design or brand...

japanese mufflers are locally available (here in the philippines). for borla or magnaflow, i'd have to import them which will take about a month if i have it shipped (cheapest option)

if i do get a universal muffler, should i get a muffler for turbo models or chambered models?

OBX.

I'm running it and have no complaints. I did a product review and have did posts a while back - so check out product reviews and do a search obx exhaust or obx catback. I should point out that it is not really a full catback since you reuse the stock center pipe.
