The NUVI uses a mini-usb connector. I think Garmin may sell a bare-wire version of the connector. If not, you should be able to buy one online somewhere.

Not sure about significantly changing the factory 12v connector. The easiest thing to do would be to hide a 12v socket in the dash and plug the connector into it.

Double check the output voltage of the lighter adapter. I was ready to cut off the adapter for my XM radio to hard wire it in to the car, but the output of the adapter is 6V. I may get a spare to dissect, although mounting an extra socket is probably the easiest way to go.

hey rob
thanks for the input...yes i checked it nd its a 5 or 6 volt output. i'll have to put in a spare cig plug. i did that on my other mini on the passenger side for my laptop.

any idea which of the wires under the driver side kick panel will be a good accesory on wire?

thanks

I'm not sure on wiring. My plan is to wire into the lighter. I like the fact that it is switched power. The power switch on my XM is a little flaky - last thing I need is to get in the car in the morning with a dead battery because the radio didn't shut off.

I used one of these to connect from the fuse box to the Nuvi:

Hey guys,

I'm really confused! Does anybody have a good way to hard wire my nuvi.
1. What voltage does the nuvi need
2. Waht is the barrel resistor
3. I thought to just cut the lighter plug and h/wire it (don't think this is right.
4. Found in other thread about fuse extenders
on and on You see my confusion.

I bought a lighter socket with bare wires at radio Shack. I attached the hot line from the socket to an Add-a-circuit and that went to the fuse box. The other wire from the socket went to ground. Then I plugged the stock cigarette lighter cord into the socket under the dash and ran the wire to the NUVI.
