New features / changes compared to the EOS 20D
New features / changes compared to the EOS 20D
- Redesigned body (more EOS 5D like)
- Larger LCD monitor (2.5")
- Soft-touch shutter release button
- AE/AF lock remains set if shutter is kept half-pressed between shots
- Faster startup and wake from sleep times
- Direct print button on rear of camera (woo!)
- Spot metering
- 100,000 shot shutter cycle
- ISO selectable in third stop steps
- ISO speed shown in viewfinder as you change it (still not once changed though)
- Selectable 5 or 3 fps continuous shooting
- PictureStyles instead of simple image parameters
- 9,999 images per folder (instead of 100 as per the EOS 20D)
- 15 menu languages (3 new)
It is interesting that it's still 8 mp and 5 fps. I would have thought Canon would have upped the ante. Seems to me to be more of a 25D than a full 30D.
Well, darn. I was hoping for more of an upgrade. I have been considering the 20D for a while now. THis is a nice refresh, but not an evolutionary model jump. Still, this will probably be my choice now.

One of the big reasons I bought my 350d was that I resented Nikon encrypting the white balance information in their raw files. It's kind of a principle-of-the-thing thing (uh...) I suppose, but I just didn't want to support them for that reason.
It seems more like what the 10D was from the D60, only minor improvements. Then there was a big jump to the 20D. So the next one after the 30D should be a big step.
They're all a lot better than my D60, and the price continually creeping down makes it an even more attractive upgrade for me, but I still can't afford it. :( Maybe it will eventually allow me to get a used 20D cheap.

Canon really needs to work on their model designations. Josh, is your D60 a film camera? The Flickr groups I'm watching are predicting a bunch of people getting screwed on eBay by buying D30s when they really want the 30D (which is supposedly a film camera that I can find no trace of on Canon's site).

The encryption issue is related to Nikon encrypting the white balance data in the camera to only permit Nikon authorized and presumeably licensed software to access the white balance data from NEF raw files. This limits which software you could potentially use to adjust RAW NEF files. That said, it does not limit you to just Nikon Capture as NEF files can be edited in photoshop CS2 (the default standard). So right now, it's not really a problem, but down the road if Nikon wanted to (and why they would I don't know) they could potentially make it more restrictive in terms of what software could adjust NEF files.

Nikon encrypts D2X white balance metadata
They (Nikon) decided to ENCRYPT the white balance data inside the NEF file for these cameras. Previously, the white balance data was stored in non-encrypted format, and was readable to third party raw converters using simple reverse engineering of the file format.
Here is another link with some more information.

One of my customers brought their 20D in today and we played with eac others camera. The 20D felt small and flimsy in comparison to the D200. I hope the 30D will be more substantial.
Looking forward to getting my fiance out of her Rebel.
