I am looking for a compact donut-type of spare tire that I can stick in the back for long trips. I can use it temporarily on the back of an S with 17s, can't I?

Of course you can. The outside diameter of the donut spare is similar (though probably a bit smaller, but not enough to worry about for /temporary/ use) to the outside diameter of all properly sized MINI tire and wheel combinations.

The wheel size would only be an issue if you have JCW or aftermarket brake components.

I've heard that a Honda spare will work also.

no worry using spare even with bbk

one can simply use the spare even if you get a flat in the front by...

moving the good rear normal size tire to the front and putting spare on back where it fits...

I suggest getting a nice bag too... Helix sells one i think made by the bag lady... I got it and it is a nice set up... Fits behind the passenger seat where it can be compressed slightly by the seat back so it stays secure during spirted driving.....

I bought my spare from the dealer for $150 and bag for $39 I think.... No flats in past 2+ years.. but figure i would definately get one far from civilization if i didn't have the spare......

Several months back we did a run on Angeles Crest Highway, and in the group that we had, there were a few Coopers including myself. One of the MCS's hit a rock, and got a huge gash in her runflat sidewall.

Being stranded near the peak of the mountain, no cell phone coverage, and snow all around us, she would have been stuck had it not been for the Coopers. I loaned her my spare--swapped the rear 17" and put it up front, and the donut on the back. She was fine, and drove home this way. She said she really couldn't even tell she had a donut on the rear.

The use of a honda/mazda spare has been discussed many times and I don't recall if there has been a general consensus on if either would work (even if they only work on the rear, as that would be acceptable). I've been using one of my 15in snow tires as a spare but its much larger than a donut.

This isn't an option, it's an absolute necessity! NEVER put a temporary spare on the front of a FWD car!

Spare tire search...Honda and other issues

This has been discussed a bunch. The Honda civic rims will fit the rears but may have problems clearing the brakes on the front and I guess there are computer and safety issues, so I've been advised to put the good tire on the front and move the Honda Civic wheel to the rear.

Another option is the 15 inch normal Cooper wheel as noted above.

I, too, would like to buy an original MC spare donut if someone has one for sale.
