FS: MC Turbo Kit - SOLD

MC Turbo Kit by Turbo Specialties Inc. - SOLD

New in boxes. Should be professionally installed. 6-7 pounds of boost. I purchased the kit from prostreetonline.com and never had it installed before I sold the car. They sell the kit for $1599.99 + S/H (I paid more for it).

The kit does not come with A/F components, but this is how they explained that it doesn’t require any:
“I can tell you that the kit comes with an adjustable FPR, which connects to your fuel rail and raises fuel exponentially 14 parts to one part air for every pound of boost it sees. Turbo Specialties designs these kits to work in its very basest of forms and configurations when you purchase the superior kit. We have installed these units in 3 coopers in our area with no problems.”

From their web site:
"TSI Superior Turbo Kits are designed to meet the need of the avid auto enthusiast. Using the top quality Garrett Turbos in a bolt on package you can safely increase your horsepower while maintaining the engines durability and reliability. By simply adding 6 to 7 pounds of boost to your air and fuel flow system you can enjoy approximately 30 percent more horsepower from your engine. This is the most cost effective way to increase horsepower while maintaing the integrity of your daily drive. Comes with everything necessary to install! Kit is a complete bolt-on!"

Turbo: T20 with internal wastegate @ 6psi, Oil Cooled (no IC required)

The attached picture shows everything that came in the kit.

I have Jason's phone number at Turbo Specialties if you have tech questions. PM me for it.

Shipping (UPS from 28590): box 1 - 28 lbs, size 16x16x9 in. box 2 - 18 lbs, size 14x25x9 in.

Is the kit 100% complete? Is it for the MCS or the MC? Why did you decide to sell it?

Yes, the kit is 100% complete. You can see a large photo of all the parts by going to http://www.emeraldcityminis.com/imag...97/turbolg.jpg.

The kit is for a standard Cooper. I was given the opportunity to purchase my MCS before I installed the turbo on the MC. I ended up selling the MC right after I got the S, so I was left with the turbo and some other parts.

The kit is intriguing. Makes me wonder how come no one has talked about it here on any of the forums--or did I just miss it? Seem the tuners that have tried it have given up. $1500 is very reasonable for 30% gain in hp (34.5hp)

It's interesting that they talk about how it's safe for the motor, yet the weak link is the midlands transmission. Maybe it's more appropriate for an '05 with a getrag 5 speed?

There have been a couple of posts about it. Most people are skeptical about anything that doesn't come from Webb, M7, Alta, etc.

My biggest concern when I first got it was the lack of an obvious way to control a/f ratio. I was thinking I'd have to purchase something like an AFCII and get the car dyno tuned. When I questioned the dealer about it that's when I found out about the built in adjustable FPR that automatically changes the a/f based on boost levels. I was also concerned about the cooling, but when you see the size of the turbo you can tell that the oil cooling will suffice... especially at the low boost levels.

I have the phone number of the manufacturer if anyone would like to contact them for more info.

If you look at the close-up, you'll notice how quickly the 4 exhaust ports come into 1. Doesn't that seem a touch restrictive? Given the amount of heat in that area, and the relatively restricted amount of space, what kind of heat issues would you be dealing with on this unit?

I must admit, it does look tempting, especially as a high-flow cat doesn't cost much less...

Speaking of cats, does this thing even have one? What about the O2 sensors?

Hmmm. As far as heat goes... as long as the turbo is being cooled properly there shouldn't be a problem. Right? We're getting a little out of my league as far as the tech stuff goes.

For more technical information I suggest calling Jason at Turbo Specialties. (888) 930-2424. They make the kit and know waaaay more than I do about it.

Here's a bit more info on the kit... Thanks to ahamos for doing the research!! I'm going to quote him directly and let the techies out there come to their own conclusions. Enjoy!

I had a number of questions for him, and I'll share them and the answers with you:

1. Is there a catalytic converter? no

2. Are there receptacles for O2 sensors? yes

This one's a mystery. The MINI uses a closed-loop monitoring system to maintain proper A/F ratio. The loop takes its readings from the O2 sensors pre- and post-cat, and measures the temperature difference between the two. If there's no cat, what's the point of accomodating the O2 sensors? When the MINI runs in open-loop mode, A/F ratio is approximated, which generally leaves you running rich == dumping fuel.

3. Turbo-timer necessary? probably, along with an oil-cooler

When you shut off the engine, the turbo must spool down. If the oil-pump is not running, the turbo spins down dry, which is bad. A turbo-timer leaves the engine running, but with the turbo disengaged for about a minute-- long enough to keep oil running through the turbo while it spins down.
Of course, if your oil is actively cooling another component, the temperature of the oil will rise, necessitating an oil-cooler. Webb motorsports used to sell one, but now I can't find one anywhere.

4. Tuning? Contact Helix for turbo tuning

He estimated $700 for the ancillary necessary components, including chip-tuning and oil-cooler. That doesn't include $500 for installation, but I had planned to do that myself.
