It's not that simple

FYI, just tossing a HID capsule in a reflector/lens assembly that's not designed for it won't necessarily be all that great. Proper HID lighting is a system that includes everything from ballast to lens and it's all designed to work together. It might work, then again, you might be out a lot of $$$$$.

Check out this link: http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/hl-hid-kits.htm

It's a kind of crappy website, but it's part of a really awesome forum made up of people doing really creative HID conversions and building systems from scratch. Here's the link to that: http://www.network54.com/Forum/216460

As with most things, you usually get what you pay for.

A "quick and simple" bulb replacement like this is also not good news for other road users.

Look at the lighting pattern of factory Xenons - cut off at a height to prevent dazzle to oncoming traffic. Our MINI factory Xenons also are self levelling, and have washers - both required in Europe to prevent dazzle.

Fitting bright xenon bulbs in the stock fixture with kits like these are part of the reason why Xenons get a bad press ...

Okay, I guess I'll add my 2 cents. I believe McCulloch has been shut down by the Federal government so I would verified with the seller who will honor the warranty.

aftermarket xenon

for those of us that have HID in our MINI's i don't think it would be a big deal to replace our high beams with the HID lights. i've seen them installed in some other cars and it's amazing. i wish my low beam xenon would go that far forward.

Did you install bulbs or hid kits? From what I have read and understand ballasts are neded to fire up the xenon bulbs and I don't believe that works for high beams.

Bi-xenon is another story but I am pretty sure Minis aren't equipped with them.

I kinda wish people around here would stop acting like we are all little children!

I have Xenons and fully understand the safety features built into them and why they are there.

I want my Highs to match my Lows. Just a personal preference and I don't intend to run around town w/ my Highs on all the time. Yes, I have researched kits to do this and understand that HID is not just a bulb swap. Maybe everyone is getting thrown off by my 3level fiberglass wing, 4" exhaust tips and under body neons?

So these replacement bulbs are for the high beam only? I did not see that mentioned anywhere else - I thought non-xenon lights had the normal & high beam in the same bulb.

I agree if this kit is a simple way to boost the high beam performance of xenon equipped MINIs, that is pretty neat - you already then have the self-leveling and washers, and only use highs when there is no oncoming traffic so no worries there either.
Is that what you can do with this kit?

Well, since you put it that way, I guess I won't offer you any suggestions.

Actually, try the superwhite bulbs. I understand they are pretty white. I am going to investigate them myself.

GBMini,

The Xenon Headlights use HID for the low beams and ordinary halogen bulbs for high beams. While functionally okay there is a big difference in the "color" of the two, the HID being much whiter and the halogen haveing a yellowish tint. Some people would just like the two to match better for looks and if we can get some better performance that would be great too.

Xenons are not meant for instant on so as high beams they aren't the best solution...although with bi-xenon the little shield moves but that probably requires a headlight retrofit.

I ain't no child.

Meanboy--I'm not saying anyone shouldn't have bright lights or that most of us don't know when to shut off our high beams--I have 130w IPF driving lights, plus a 100w pencil beam and I'm very careful to use them only when they won't bother folks (and to everyone else, I know they're illegal--so is speeding and modifying your engine)--what I am saying is that so-called "plug n play" HID kits are rarely that, and I don't like to see people get hosed, especially by people who are selling something for their "friend" who "just sold his mini"!

Now where did I put my rattle . . .

Chollo9, not sure what you are referring to when you used my handle but one of my posts stated that the brand of HID is no longer in business so I questioned who would support it.

With that in mind, I ordered a kit from xenondepot for a hid kit for our Lexus. It doesn't have the hid reflectors so there will be some bleeding and glare but hopefully adjusting the headlights will take of that. But I might cancel that since they are backordered right now and try some superwhites for it. BTW, the kit offered for the mini in this thread is the same price new from a vendor on the web. The only difference is the shipping cost.

Sorry Meanboy, got mixed up, it was doomsdaybob's comment about people being little children that I was answering. I just didn't want to give the impression that people shouldn't have bright lights, just that they should have good ones and get what they pay for. My apologies for sending the response your way.

the aftermarket HID kit i refer to early in the thread is a brand called Polarion. they make a bulb that will fit into the stock hi-beam housing. it is a true xenon kit that includes a starter and a new harness. not much room under the hood in a mini. it might be hard to mount the starters/ballast.
