F55/F56 Mods or Chip-Tuning, for more low-speed torque?
Mods or Chip-Tuning, for more low-speed torque?
I have a 2024 JCW F57. (I posted this in the F56 prefix to get more views, since it's the same engine.)
8 speed automatic, of course. There is no manual tranny option for the F57.
I haven't really pushed it yet as the engine hasn't broken in, But I notice that even in sport mode, while it feels great between 40 mph and 65 mph, It's kind of a dog between 10 and 40.
Even using the paddle shifters leaves me a bit frustrated. Weird, because maximum torque is supposed to be at 1400 rpm, but it sure doesn't feel like it,
I think the problem is that turbocharged engines just don't wake up until you reach enough revs (maybe 3,500 rpm on this engine) . While that might be great for the track, or for attempting to lose you license / hit a pedestrian, etc on the street, it's far from ideal for typical "sporty" driving on suburban B roads. IMO, all the fun there is in taking tight turns then powering out.
-----------------------
So I'm wondering what mods might give the best improvement at lower revs / lower speeds. I do intend to add an Eventuri open-scoop intake system, as soon as they are available for the 2024, but that may be more of an audible improvement than anything else.
So - Any ideas? Can chip tuning help with this?

The intake system won't do much, so save the $1500 (or whatever they cost now)
What you really need to do is learn to lean into the gas pedal more. There should be plenty of go, as long as you keep the revs up. With an 8-speed transmission, should be pretty easy to do. If you think the car is a dog between 10-40mph, then you're in the wrong gear.

I haven't driven the Auto JCW so can't really comment. Check if Dinan still offers a plug in. I have a plug in (Module) on my 2018 JCW, it adds more punch pretty much the entire RPM range.

I can tell you from experience with the RaceChip GTS with Bluetooth installed on a 2022 that the bump in power is absolutely unusable down low. It just makes it chaos to drive and makes the car flighty as can be. It pushes over 290HP in the most aggressive setting, and unsure how much it steps down from there (maps 1 through 7). Didn’t get power to the ground well until about 2…. Up above 45 MPH, it’s quite a different story. Much more power on tap. But I’ve returned to stock tune, personally
Bought my 2023 JCW (with a 6-speed) in Loveland CO. That was 873 miles from home... Pretty much got out of my 2022 S (with the 7-speed dual clutch transmission and 7K miles on the car) and into a spanking new JCW with the 6-speed. Hadn't gotten very far when I started to have 2nd doubts. The JCW was a bit of a dog.
Toyed with idea of turning around and getting my S back. (That was a great car!)
But decided to give the JCW some time.
Pressed on home.
On the way home and after 500+ miles of driving -- with some attention paid to ensure proper break in -- IOWs I just didn't set cruise to 70mph and motor mile after mile -- the engine perked up quite noticeably.
Think you just need to give the new engine more time more run time.
My 2023 JCW specs:
Power: 228 hp @ 6200 rpm
Torque: 236 lb-ft @ 1450 rpm
236 lb-ft of torque at 1450 RPMs... Think you would be hard pressed to better that.

All good points, guys.
BUT NOTE:
The 2025 JCW is going to still have "only" 228 HP, but the torque is increasing to 258 ft/lbs, and still maxing at 1450 rpm.
It will be interesting to see how they do this.
---------------------
Fun fact:
The JCW will also be given a newly-design DC automatic (yay!) which can handle that torque.
I'd consider upgrading from my 2024, if Mini hadn't made the headlights and dashboard looks so ridiculous.

Yes, it turns out that their "X" plugin module is specifically tuned for increased low-rpm torque. The tradeoff is that it peters out revs higher than about 5,000. So this is exactly what I need, although a full ECU tune would still be better. - And it's only $250. Sweet !
Yep that's the simple piggyback. Just went on sale. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-dinan-pa...d440-0012~din/

Nice, thx!
Maybe you can answer one important question: (I was going to call Dinan, but it would be good to have the answer here.)
On the Dinan website, it says that this unit is not legal for street use, but gives no further info. It also says that there are three settings, with varying boost.
So is it street elgal on the first (or first & second) settings?
I suppose one could always remove it before an inspection, but that seems like a small PITA if not needed.

They do that as its emissions changing for Cali and other places. Yep, most people just swap out, its an easy change.
