Best run (mileage) yet w/ JCW

I'm new here, but I guess this is the place to post this.

I've had my JCW kit installed MCS since pickup and have been somewhat (ok, slightly) disappointed by the mpg it was getting. I knew having the works kit would lower the mileage a little (particularly if you stomp on it! ) but I had never did better then 27 mpg trying to "behave". Routinely around town, its been 23 -25 mpg. No big deal as I didn't really buy it for gas mileage, and it still does better then most other performance cars (I heard RX8 owners lament over their sub 20 mpg)

Anyway, I guess the key to the mileage is in not shifting and stopping at all. On my recent trip to Memphis to the Liberty Bowl (GO CARDS!) got about 27 on the trip out there, with 2 stops along the way. However on the trip back home, I filled up in Memphis and did the entire 375 mile trip back to Louisville non-stop on a single tankful of gas in exactly 5 hours, averaging about 75 mph accordingly.

Final fillup stats: 12.4 gals for 378 miles = 30.48 mpg.
outside airtemp: 60 - 65F
A/C: on (automatic, set at 66)
Cruise: off
Radio: off

Yaahoo.....I finally broke 30 mpg! Must have been the radio!
I think the key was probably staying in 6th gear the nearly the entire trip, probably only downshifted to 5th twice the entire 5 hours.

What type of mileage do other JCW owners get?

JCW Mileage

Last August the wife and I undertook a 9 day, 9 state roadtrip. We went from Kansas City to Jackson Ohio to attend a wedding, then down to Gatlinburg Tennessee to romp around the Great Smoky mountains for a few day. South from there to Marietta Georgia, back north to Chattanooga Tennessee (aquarium), Lynchburg Tennessee (Jack Daniels distillery) and Nashville. Then back home.

Now M. Clive was fully loaded with clothes, food stuffs, camera gear and the like, plus 2 adults.

Our best mileage for the trip was 30.8 with the worst being 26.4. Overall mileage for the trip was 29.3 miles to the gallon. We did drive the speed limit plus a few, and had some spirited drives in the mountains.

We were comfortable with the cruise control on, air set at 70 degrees and CDs playing. The seat heaters, even on a warm day, are a blessing to 50+ year old backsides.

The Zaino kept bug accumulation on the paintwork to a minimum and Invisible Glass removed them from the windscreen.

taw

M.Clive is an 04 DS/B JCW.

Best mileage to date

One trip to Yosemite, I followed my buddy in his Toyota, so we held the speed under 75 and I got 29 for a tank. My usual mileage on the highway, going with the flow of traffic (80+), is 25....it all depends on the right foot......around town if I gas it up through the gears a lot, I'm under 20 easy. No big deal. I didn't buy this car to win economy runs....not that I'm flying around like a loose cannon, but it does demand to be heard......

no stripes, no lights, no clear bras... thank you

Mileage

I have gotten 32.1 on trips to Fla. and NC twice. 31.4 on two trips tp NJ.Since installing the Stage II JCW kit mileage has dropped below 29 mpg.But the power band is a lot nicer with the kit. Hope you found this of some help.

My best with the 200hp kit was 30 mpg on a long road trip. I did close to 350 miles on a tank and the range was about 40 miles.

Now, I have the 210hp version and average 22-25 mpg on a regular basis. I am definitely going to beat the previous record tonight however when I fill up as I will complete 370 miles or so on this tank (nearly all highway miles)!

The best I've seen is 28.58 (calculated...your OBC lies!)
I had one tank that was mostly highway and due to traffic was forced to travel 65mph most of the time, and was getting over 30, but the last 3rd sat for another week and short moves so I lost it. But in other words, the key really is, all highway in 6th, and speeds low around 60.

My gas graphs are here:

I did a before and after mileage comparison of the JCW 200 vs 210. I topped off the gas tank before I left and again when I got to Classic MINI for the upgrade install and then again when I got home ( 260 miles each way). On the way there I averaged 69.7 mph and 30 miles per gallon (34 mpg according to the obc). On the way back I averaged 71.2 mph and 32 miles per gallon (34.5 according to the obc).

On a recent roundtrip from Michigan to Charleston S.C. of 2200 miles the results were similar. Highway average speed was a little over 70mph and the calculated mileage averaged 32 mpg (34 mpg according to the obc). Around town driving has been around 28 mpg. Overall a consistent 2 mpg improvement over the JCW 200.

I am not sure what is contributing to this increase (improved ECU programming, air box efficency, larger injectors, zaino wax) but I am very pleased with the upgraded performance the JCW 210 provides (plus another JCW emblem under the bonnet).

It's odd...I have a JCW 200 and since the beginning (Mar '04) I've averaged 26-27. I touched 28mpg one time, a trip to Winnipesaukee and back which was entirely highway. I don't push it, usually doing about 75 or so.

Then, about two weeks ago, I noticed a markedly different "feel" to the clutch & gas pedals, they feel very spongy, the clutch engage point feels different (lower), and when I blip the throttle it barely responds. Last two fillups in that period have been 28.9 and 28.8 mpg respectively. Note that this is a mixture of hwy & around town. I go ~20 miles 1-way to work each day, mostly hwy. But on the weekends I'm tooling around town taking the kids to sports, etc.

I got the v39 update in November, so it's not recent....

Thanks for all your comments, particularly those who have done the 10 hp upgrade....I was a little concerned it might suck it down faster, but maybe that'll won't be the case. Hopefully I'll be up to Cincy later this month to upgrade!

Aloha folks-

Got the JCW upgrade to my '04 kit two weeks ago. Not much change to fuel consumption.

I'm averaging 220 miles on a full tank of 76 supreme. Most of my driving is City miles.

Aloha!
