Need advice on 2009 JCW before making purchase

Hey Guys,

Looking for some advise on a JCW thats for sale. Its out of state so I can't see it in person before purchase.

My biggest concern is the engine noise. I had the private dealer take a video of a cold start and rev. It doesn't sound right to me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a link to the engine vid.

Here is a link to the selling dealer.

That’s doesn’t sound as quiet as mine. That might need some timing chain maintenance.

Replaced @ 42k by Mini Dealer and seller claims replaced @70k. The selling dealer is a Mini master tech gone solo and selling mini now.

Someone described it like a sewing machine. Basically just hear the injectors. I won’t be able to do audio till tomorrow. You really need to test drive these things. Look at the horror stories of people who haven’t. Get it up to temp and drive it hard, see if any lights pop up. Search N14 engine woes. Mine burns a qt every 1500, not leak, burns it, it’s the turbo. I check my oil every time I get gas, have 145000 and it purrs, almost to quiet.

Sounds exactly like my '09 MCS. The VIN checks to a real JCW so you have that going for you. Well optioned with aero. Aftermarket rims (not a fan). If all the work checks out you will be good for the next 30-40k miles. Price seems a little high though.

Nice color combo too...never seen that in a JCW before....
Not easy to attain the level of a MINI Master Tech....top level performance no "come backs" to dealer after service work meaning it was fixed right first time while attaining a level of production.....
Check oil often as suggested above.
Frequent oil changes a must....the high tollerances for the pistons clearance in these Prince engines = significant blow by and oil consumption. The oil secondary mission is to keep rotational front engine parts such as timing chain assembly cool. There are two solenoid valves which look like futuristic spark plugs used for timing which have tiny microscreens....They regulate VVT. When fouled they will need replacing due to poor drivability.

I know the seller personally, he did the PPI on my 04 JCW when I bought it back in 2016 (while he was at Seattle Mini) and I've since bought, or helped people buy, 3 JCW Clubman's from him (my cousin's 2009, my 2011, and a friends 2013). He is a stand up, solid guy.

Thanks for sharing and your experiences.

Its just interesting as some say the engine sounds normal and others are Saying the opposite. I don’t have much experience with minis so that’s why I have posted to get some feedback, so again thanks.

no worries I had to search a bit to confirm. Here’s a link for what appears to be all available mini wheel options.

My experience with the seller was a little different from the previous post. Not here to trash him.

Just saying that you should always do your own research.

N14 would not be the engine that I would buy site unseen. Definitely needs to be seen and drive.

If you've got something to say you should just say it
