New JCW, holy wow
Got a '10 JCW on Friday. Took it out to some really curvy mountain roads on Saturday, it's absolutely amazing. Well balanced, eager to go fast and grips like a stage-4 clinger in the turns!
Question: I've never owned an S, a JCW, or any turbo charged car before. I noticed (at lower speeds, at higher ones I was focused... elsewhere) that when I let off the gas I hear a popping noice from the exhaust. Is that probably the "burble" I've heard talked about? It's really odd coming from plain old naturally aspirated cars and want to be sure it's expected.
Drive it like you stole it!

+1. Its supposed to mimmick the mis-fires/unburned fuel burning in the exhaust on deceleration from highly tuned racing engines.
I love the sound of the pops and burbles from my JCW, but is it really doing anything? I only get them when in sport, I made some assumptions about what was happening, but what is REALLY happening to cause this? is it just for "show"?

Yeah, its just for show and is the computer being set in sport mode to allow a few drops of unburned fuel in the exhaust and that is what causes the sounds. According to MINI, it's a very negligible amount so as not to affect fuel economy.
Thanks all. I figured that's what it was, and I think it sounds awesome.
I got the car used and so it came with some nice features like the harmon kardon system. I don't think I've used the sounds system once because the car sounds too good!

He has a 2010 JCW which had an N14. The pop and burble crap was first instituted in the Gen 2 MINIs in the 2011 MCS's N18. I'm not sure what you're hearing, Woah.
On an editorial note, I absolutely HATE the childish pop and burble. If my engine isn't going to make the naturally, I don't want it, especially when id decides to pop once sounding like a loud backfire. i wish somebody would learn to tune it out of the ECU.
Woah, congrats on your MINI. Rule the Bends, Bend the Rules!

Those who removed their resonator may want to check the thread somewhere in here where they ran b2b dyno runs with and without. It was reported (no charts to verify, mind you) they lost HP with the resonator removed. You can do a google search and this is highly debated among any brands with enthusiasts. Maybe all BS but my butt dyno says I lost some on the low end so I put it back on. It might be negligible because you make it up in the top end?? Plus the pops without the resonator was just too much pop for me. Sounds more like something is wrong than something pleasant, but different strokes and all that....

Mayhaps I was, Muzak, no offense taken as I am but a simple humble man. That said, I still hate the crap and wish someone would figure out how to disable it... Love the increased sensitivity (tightness) of the steering and gas pedal but hate.......
I was just goingto post about the P&B. I have a 2010/11 with an N18 and have never had the P&B. Now I know why
Not to split off from this topic but, my car actually won't allow me to rev past 4000rpm when in neutral, so I really can't say if it P&Bs. I've never heard it while driving or downshifting either.
Is there anyone on here with a real reason as to why MINI have seem to put a rev restrictor in the software for revving with no load? Is it a safety feature to protect the engine? What gives?

Well that's great to know it's not just my car. I can't really compare it to any other Cooper on the island cause I've got the only S here. Any link to that thread?

I tested it, our 2012 JCW doesn't have the limit in neutral.

I wonder if there could be a BMW/ MINI tech or rep on here that could chime in as to why certain changes have taken place? No P&B, 4000 neutral rev limiter, what next no synchros to really make new-comers feel nostalgic lol?
