21 pounds is a "lightweight" wheel for 18", but I consider 18" wheels to be more of a fashion statement than a performance consideration.
For ultimate performance, a lightweight 15 or 16" blows the lugnuts off of any 18" wheel.
The JCW wheels are sure pretty though. I bought the heavy BBS R-90's for pure fashion, but will soon have 16" wheels for track and performance use. . .

>>The new JCW 18" wheel comes in somewhere around 21 to 22 lb, which is a lot lighter than the 17" R90. Is that a reasonable weight for a 18"?

No. JCW is supposed to be about performance. If a wheel is heavy, then it is a bling bling wheel. If one can get an SSR in 18 that is just 13lbs, then JCW should use just as light of a wheel.

The stock MINI 17" R90 two piece is about 24 pounds for the rim alone which is heavy but not as heavy as the Stock S-lyte rim at 25 pounds. In any event they are about the same.
The JCW 18" rim at 21 pounds is not quite as bad being a bit lighter but still heavy compared to the lightest of the 18" rims. I would say that if I were to consider an 18" rim I'd want it to be in the 15 to 17 pound range or lighter but that would add to the cost and possibly make the rim less durable.
I agree that the JCW rim is all about looks and name. Could it be designed lighter? Sure but it might cost much more.
Oh well. Such is the cost of looks.
