Has anyone added rear fogs?

If you answered this before they changed the format to first and second generation, I appologize, but I can't find the thread anywhere.

I want to add rear fogs on my 09 JCW. I see removeable plugs back there, looks simple and I am hoping cheap. Is it pre-wired? Will they simply come on when the front fogs are on or is there more to it than that? Is it a dealer only item or do any of the NAM sponsors carry them?

I checked under there last night and there is no harness. I am assuming the rear fogs have a pigtail that maybe plugs into the tail light above? Can someone with rear fogs snap a quick picture to help me solve the mystery?

Thanks

Rears do not turn on with fronts. They have their own dedicated switch. If you want to go the cheap route, then do what I did and splice into the side wheel arch markers. This way your fogs will be on only when you turn on your lights. If you want oem wiring, then you will need the rear fog switch that is on the center console, wiring harnesses, and reprogram the car's computer...$$$$. The fogs use 35watt bulbs so splicing into the markers is ok and does trigger any warning lights on your tach.....

to do it 'right' means getting the lights themselves and the wiring and then changing out the toggle panel and going in for a reprogramming...and in some cases is simply not possible according to some posts here (software version and year, but I haven't paid that much attention)

There a couple of DIY kicking around but this quickly becomes a pretty involved project if you want the full monty.

Or you can do it on the cheap for a 75% solution. I wanted the look - hate those butt plugs - but not the cost when I didn't get these on my off the lot buy.

For about $60 I bought the lights themselves. They pop in the bumper in the place of the plugs in about 45 seconds per side. They don't lite up but how ofter do you actually NEED rear fogs anyway?

http://www.outmotoring.com/mini-coop..._lamp_kit.html

MINSPEED used to sell the lens and a wiring kit to make them brake lights but MinSpeed.net recently sold out to Way Motor Works and I don't see this item on the Way' site yet.

Thanks for the link. The stealer quoted me 94.00 just for the lights. I think I will use a relay to tap into the front fogs so they simply come on together. That should satisfy the indicator light rule. I have to check out if there is a brake light height rule for California. If there is I will simply do the brake light tie in with a diode to meet that one.

Thanks for the good info guys!

What did you do for the plug into the bulb of the new rear fogs. I just installed mine today, but need to find plug to set up wiring.

Did you have any luck tapping into the front fogs? If so, I'd be very much interested in knowing how you did it.

I'm going through a similar thing with my 09 JCW convertible right now (see this thread:https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...reference.html )

In my case, the wires are all there, but the dealer has told me that programming them to work isn't possible at this time. I don't see myself running the fronts without the backs anyway, so I'd actually prefer having them all come on with the flick of one switch.

Anyway, any info on this would be appreciated.

Gents, this link at GoMiniGo may help with your desire to add more lighting to the rear of the car. While my car came with the Rear Fogs, the concept is useless in 99.9% of the driving conditions. That's why I'm converting them to Brake Lights - the added light should help when its really needed.

read about it down the page at http://www.gominigo.com/BLK-MINI.html

Well, today I popped in & hooked up the rear fog light assemblies that I bought from outmotoring. It took me all of 5 minutes, as a thunderstorm was rolling in, and I was anxious to finish up before the wind and rain started to really pick up.

Now the big question is how to get them to work as actual fog lights. I live on the northern California coast. Dense fog is pretty much a daily thing for most of the year. We actually have an annual "Fogfest" here. I was also up in the Sierras this past weekend, going over Donner pass in a snow storm. Visibility was terrible, but the Audi in front of me had rear fog lights that really stood out & added an element of safety to the situation.

Does anyone know how much it would be to have the Mini dealership to do it "the right way"?

We have all the parts to do it
http://www.waymotorworks.com/rear-fo...s-r56-r57.html

http://www.waymotorworks.com/rear-fo...7-r58-r59.html

But you still need to code the car to make it work. If your going to be doing MTTS in Charlotte or Nashville we can do it there for you.

Does the kit from outmotoring come with the bulb holders, or just the red lenses?

Am I correct in assuming that, for an '09 model year Clubbie, all the wiring and such is already installed, and that one of the rear (left, I think) tail lamp housings already has the fog lamp in it (in place of the back-up light)? Thus, all that is needed to activate the rear fog light is:
  • Toggle switch
  • Programming
  • Instrument panel bezel (if you want to make it look factory-correct)

Thanks!

You car correct you don't have to buy any lights.

Our lens kits do come with the bulbs and sockets.

the outmotoring part is the lens - with the backplate which is where the bulb holder would plug in
****EDIT - this is the female part of the bulb assembly on the lens unit - the male part with the bulb would be connected to the harness*****

you can kinda sorta see in this picture

BUT - this was 2 years ago . . .

So it has the female socket that the bulb holder screws into?

Yes the lens come with the bulb and socket to be plugged right into. My '09 R56 went right it, popped into the car and plugged into the harness in just minutes. I added the switch but haven't programmed it yet.

Anyone got a quote from a dealership on programming? Or even an approximate?
