Anyone install the JCW shift light???

JCW Shift light is installed....
It was an easy mod since it is factory everything was done pretty well. It took me about an hour but, if I had to do it again I could do it in 30 minutes. You dont really need any tools for this.

1. Removing the factory cover is a little pain, I used a tiny screw driver to pop the clip points and presto...it was off.

2. The JCW shift light comes with a new cover, its as ease as running and securing the wiring then snapping the new part in place.

3. There are only (3) wires you tap into place. I have a PDF from BMW if you need a copy.

4. Test to make sure it lights up and then tuck everything in place.

There is an on/off button on the back of the light pod. The Gree light is a little bright at night. I used a tiny piece of Limo tint and I will see tonight if that tones the center green light down a bit.

You only see the other lights when you get over about 5K.....dont hold me to that but I will tell you the lights start coming on when you well into the power band and should be starting to think about shifting.

The light is more of a day to day novelty however, I can really see if you autocross it could be an effective tool....

I would like to see a gear shift indicator for the autocross days..anyone know if there is a company that makes one?

Can you turn the lights off when you don't want to use them? I've been thinking about this mod, but I worried that it would always be there eventually bugging the crap out of me.

Yes you can turn the lights off with a little button right on back of the light pod...When you running there is only one light on, the green one in the center. I will tell you at night it is pretty bright, it is a LED. The only time you see any other lights is when you really up in the revs...not sure what but I thing they start aroung 5K of so.

I uses a tiny piece of limo tint and tinted the center green light to see if that will tone it down at night. Will sample it tonight. looks good in the day still.

I have this in my jcw, I don't love it much. It only responds over around 5-6k rev, I prefer it on a little early, then I can play it anytime...
BTW, the green LED just too bright during the night...

light shift and steering wheel makes the interior IMO.

I have it on zero7 and soon on traxher...I like it so much got the performance wheel for the E90M so i can have the shift light.. wish we had the option as the performance wheel to set the light to match any RPM band.. its doable on the JCW part,BUT...needs to plug the wires in different settings at installation time

I like it too and will include it in all future MINIs that I may own.

It's an excellent mod for street or track. It definitely keeps you away from the rev limiter threshold when you are engaged in spirited driving.

I turn it off for night driving.

You can adjust the point when it comes on. If you didn't install it, you can locate the small box under the dash, and inside are a handful of dipswitches. On the MINI instructions it lists all the different positions for different RPM's.

Couple minutes and you will be flashing at the point you want!

If you PM or e-mail me I can tell you what to switch them too (tell me what RPM you want though!)

Yes....I played around with my switches and like the fact that it comes on when I should be getting ready to shift...I can see the novelty of having them come on early...looks cool.

Can someone tell me if this option can easily be installed on an auto transmission? Or is it only for manual?

I am biased but I think so! The OEM look and function is well worth our price of $229.99

Let me know if I can help though with any other pre or post purchase questions!

Adam,

I read the compatibility note on the website for the 07+ shift indicator. We should be able to easily replace the upper panel on the steering column on 02-06 models? I like the newer shift indicator better than the older one that sat above the speedo.

Thanks for asking. I have another thread in the 1st Gen section

that details how to do the JCW Indicator on the older cars. Hope that helps resolve your concerns. Then choose the R53 when you order online.

PLEASE let me know how I can help in anyway further!

So does it block visibility of the lower onboard computer readout? or is it just the angles of all of the pictures?

Just the angle of the photos. Doesn't come close to blocking it! Hope that helps!

Saw this for the first time last week on a MINI that came in the shop. I have to admit it looks MUCH nicer in person than i would have imagined!

FD3SDriver, that sounds good. I took advantage of the Holiday savings at Alta. Mine is on the UPS truck racing across country right now! I'm hoping to enjoy the Christmas lights again on or around January 10th!
