Why no JCW rear calipers?

Anyone know why Mini doesn't have a JCW rear caliper option for the R53?

Because the stock brakes are more than adequate.

With only 20% braking force in the rear, probably not worth the cost and effort. Also as Bigshot says ..... adequate. I thought of painting my rear calipers red to match the fronts ( not big enough for the JCW decal) which will make them look JCW

thanks for the feedback guys! I knew there was a reason, and I appreciate learning about the rear braking % vs front....

Yep - it's physics. If your car has a perfect 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, then with the car sitting still, half of the weight will be on the front tires, and half will be on the rear tires.

But when you brake, more weight is transferred to the front wheels, often as much as 80% or more of the total weight. (With motorcycles, you can easily transfer 100% of the weight to the front during braking, to the point where the rear wheel actually comes off the ground.)

The amount of braking force you can generate from a tire is proportional to the amount of weight that the tire is supporting, so the braking force from the rear wheels is limited by the fact that under heavy braking, the rear wheels simply aren't supporting much weight.

Oversized rear brakes really don't buy you much, unless you're in the habit of driving at high speeds in reverse and slamming on the brakes.

It's worth noting that while the 1st Gen JCW brake kit does not include replacement rear calipers, it does include replacement rear brake pads, which are supposed to be better performing than the stock pads.

Yes, i have the JCW brake kit, but I'm learning moe about the car everyday, especially from enthusists like NAM members. Hate to say this, but part of the concern is I wanted to match up the color of the calipers......sad but true......guess I should go find the right color paint....Thanks again!

You're by no means the first to want to do that... and many people have. I plan on doing it as well, I just want to make sure it's the right kind of heat-resistant paint, and the right shade of red!

what concerns me is that running upgraded fronts with stock rears will upset the stock brake bias. and that's no good either.

Not enough of a difference to be concerned about. If the pads are the same then no problems at all.
