At what point do you have a JCW?

Obviously if you order a JCW from the factory, you have a JCW mini.

Simple enough... however, at what point (if any) is it considered acceptable to add JCW on to your mini and be considered a JCW mini?

Is a dealer installed JCW engine kit enough to be considered a JCW mini?

Ground effects, trim, exhaust, brakes???

So, must a mini have to come with JCW from the factory to be considered a JCW mini? And if a mini comes from the factory, does that mean it came with every acceptable JCW accessory?

Just wondering?

Mark

Stage 1 at the very least before your Mini starts wearing the badges

On the same topic, how expensive is the JCW Tuning Kit where you guys are?

I contacted Mini Australia and was quoted $11,800 AUD for the tuning kit alone! I couldn't believe it.

I was saving up a few grand for it, and I've officially now lost hope.

is there a list of all of the extra accessories or upgrades that come with the factory JCW mcs?

i can see already that there is the upgraded body panel aero pieces, the exhaust, intake, ecu tune, but im sure there are a bunch of interior trim pieces and other things included with the JCW kit. where can i get a full list?

Just the suspension, or the whole Chassis Tuning Package?

Remember Ju5tin this is the second generation section of the site, we're just talking about the R56's.

According to the ancient sacred writings of Hog, Sloth, and Cromwell, a JCW R56 has to include new pistons, a heavy-duty clutch and transmission, a larger turbo, and everything else the factory Stage II JCW has.

Adding the Stage I kit and suspension options only get you a JCW enhanced MINI. Although, some claim that it can legitimately be called a Stage I JCW.

if....

If I were the kind of person who puts decals on his car, a small one on the back that said "Suspension by John Cooper Works" would be cool, but I'm not.......still don't want the badges without the engine stuff

PS standard JCW suspension kit: struts, springs and sway bars...feels pretty enhanced from here :-)

I've got the brake package and waiting for the automatic kit to come to surface....

Having said that, I still wouldn't put the badges on with just that. Something poser'ish about it.

I was just curious if people consider a stage 1 kit a true JCW.

Thanks,

Mark

You can do all you want to add JCW parts but you can't sell it as a JCW....Its like taking a regular Benz and adding AMG wheels & a AMG badge, it will never be an AMG model...you can even do work to your Mini to get the HP up but it will never be a JCW.

A MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works tuning kit is a "MINI Cooper S John Cooper Works", or MCS JCW.

A 'factory' JCW is just a "MINI John Cooper Works" or JCW.

I agree

A cooper S with the JCW Tuning Kit is a JCW Mini Cooper S the factory car is JCW Mini.

A Cooper S with a JCW Tuning Kit, JCW Suspension, and Mechanical LSD is still a JCW Tuned Cooper S that would cost 26000

However, A JCW Tuned Cooper S will defeat a Stock suspension JCW E-diff factory car on a track or auto X course for 3K less.

Counterpoint - The JCW Factory Car would be better if they were in Nascar

What is poser'ish about having a jcw badge with just the tuning kit? The stage 1 JCW tuning actually comes with the badges and is dealer installed. That said they don't remove the Cooper S badge.
The factory jcw comes with the JCW badge on the right side of the boot where the cooper badge normally goes. The tuning kit has a different badge on the left side of the car.
So if you have a tuning kit it you will have a badge installed.
When it comes to mini the badge represents the engine, not the suspension or aero kit or brakes.
If you have the stage 1 kit, take off your cooper s badge, and replace it with the factory JCW badge then it's poserish.

Bishamon is exactly right with the naming conventions.

Makes sense....

I did end up installing the emblems. I wasn't going to but I figured since the emblems were on the left side and not the right, it would be okay.

I just didn't want to make it look like I was trying to be a factory JCW car. I didn't realize at the time they were on different sides.

Thanks,

Mark

Don't worry about looking like a poser. You have the right badge for your car. If you have a tuning kit installed you should be able to show off the fact. Anyone who knows minis will not think you are trying to be a factory jcw. I wish they called the factory JCW something different just to avoid the confusion. As of a year ago if someone asked, Is your mini a JCW? You could have said yes, now a new model comes out and everybody has to be worried about semantics. Why couldnt they call it a Cooper Works, or GP Works, anything else to avoid the confusion.

Nick

On a semi-related note, with the R56, MINI has made it a lot easier to tell a factory JCW car from one that's been enhanced post-purchase by looking at the VIN. This is different from the R53/R52, where the 'S', the dealer-installed JCW package, and the factory-installed JCW package would all just show up as an 'S' when you decode the VIN.

On the R56 Coupe, if the VIN starts with "WMWMF73", it's an 'S'. If it starts with "WMWMF93", it's a factory JCW car. For the Clubman, "WMWMM33" is an 'S', and "WMWMM93" is the factory JCW version. (That's for the USA version of the Coupe and Clubman - international VINs differ).

This thread reminds me of the British motoecycle in industry. I have a 1958 Ariel 650 Twin designated a "Cyclone", verses a "Huntmaster that most 650 twins were. They did this because the Japanese (Honda) were eating their lunch. They put a high rise set of handel bars and a few other dodads on the Huntmaster and tried to take back the American market. We now try to sort these things out 60 years later, at least now Mini owners can base their opinions on recent history.

Certificate of Authenticity

I think if a COA is issued then it's a genuine badge-worthy JCW. Do the factory cars get COA's like the tuning kit? I know I didnt get a COA for either my rear sway bar nor strut brace.

I think you forgot, "with the driver being equal." Most if not all times, it comes down to the driver.
