Hints for Removal of Park Distance Control Sensors?

Does anyone have any experience with removing the park distance control sensors from the rear bumper cover? I’ve got the wires unplugged and the bumper cover removed, but I can’t figure out how to get the sensors out of the old bumper cover to transfer them to the new one. I'm assuming they're not cheap so I didn't want to mess around too much and risk breaking them.

There are nice, neat holes pre-cut into the new one, so it seems like it should be an easy snap in/out.

Thanks!

The sensors are a two piece set-up. The outer ring (as viewed from the painted side of the bumper) is sort of a tube which holds the sensor in the middle.

There are 3 clips (maybe only two) on the outer portion which you pry up one at a time to release the sensor. I used a very small screwdriver to gently pry up one tab, then pull slightly on the sensor to keep that tab from locking back in place. Just work your way around the sensor until all tabs are released and the sensor will slide out from behind the bumper. Once the sensor is out, the outer ring will slide out from the front (painted) side of the bumper.

Once you get all four out, you will notice the ring portion has alignment groves on the outside to ensure you put the proper ring in the proper hole/orientation during re-assembly. I think this is to make sure the sensor plug is facing the right way when installed.

Hope this helps.

The original poster isn't getting rid of the sensors, just replacing the bumper cover and needs to transfer the sensors over to the new cover.

It did, I really appreciate it. Mine were so dirty that they were the same color and they didn't look like two pieces.

Thanks again, ffwdm5, I really appreciate the quick response!

Glad to be of service. I lurk on this forum all the time looking for tips I can use when working on my car so it feels good to return the favor.

I got the PDC option on my '03 MCS when I ordered it new and loved it. When I decided to sell it to upgrade for an '06 MCS JCW, I ordered it again. Some people think it's a silly option to have for a car so small, but it really lets you maximize your parallel parking potential.
