Interior/Exterior Stubby Warning for R56
It's not 8.41 mm...
Me being impatient I gambled on one from someone that is not a NAM sponsor/member that advertised it could do 5mm or 6mm with interchangable screws.
I measured the threads and the old one was nearly 5mm and the new one nearly 6mm (I mis-measured last time I got 8.41 -- apparently I unscrewed the thing the antenna screws into!), so I rolled the dice.
It came with three different screw bases. The larger one fit just fine.
But please -- don't be a traitor like me -- patronize local businesses!

We have two styles specific to the R56 that aren't just a re-thread like many of the competition. The base is actually contoured differently to match the R56. Available in a 2 and 4" variant. Free shipping and only $29.99. For photos or more info check us out at www.altaminiperformance.com or call me! I am always happy to help! Thanks!
The ALTA antennas look just like the standard Mini one with the skinny braided part cut off. Why not just cut off the skinny braided part and leave the 4" stub there and save $30? Anyone ever try that idea? I can't imagine it makes any difference in reception, it's still a shorter antenna.
TheBigNewt:I will accept some responsibility here. We will try to fix that for you folks next week. The R56 antennas we offer while similar to the R53 are actually a bit different. They are not shown on our site, but only the R53. Instead of just changing the thread size etc. to match the R56, we actually changed the flare at the base etc. The only similarity is the height. Also, no criticism to your idea, but you will note when you chop that off it leaves an ugly and unfinished look. Even if our website doens't change right away I will try to post some snaps later this weekend from my own R56. Thanks for the reply!
I switched antennas with my wife's '06 Touareg
I now have a nice stubby 4-5" antenna
ABout same length as the thick section of the original antenna but thicker.
Looks perfect IMHO like it was meant for the car
Will take a pic tomorrow if I have time

Does it work well with your radio? I did a search to see what it looks like, and then I read that the Touareg roof antenna is not a radio antenna. It is used for the key remote to lock/unlock the car from very far away.
Here it is. I listened to a bit of radio to test it out (I dont listen to the radio as a rule, hate commercials) and I heard no loss of signal where I live in suburban SoCA
I'm telling you: get a very fine saw. Saw off the braided "stinger" on the OEM antenna flush with the plastic. Stick a little putty on the cut and Sharpie it black. It'll look like that stubby for free! I do like Dan's aluminum billet myself though.
The morning after I got my 07 MCS, I got a pair of cable cutters, snipped off the length. Quickly filed the cut smooth, then put a small dab of black silicon on the tip and tapered it. My MA gave me a big comment on it when he saw it. I don't notice any difference in the radio quality except to the university radio station 25 miles away. hehehe.
I will take a photo tonight and show you.
