How to black out door handles???

So this weekend i want to paint my door handles black, but im not sure the best path to take when doing them.

For the people who have had their door handles painted, did you take them off and paint them? or did you tape them off and paint them while on the car? If you taped it off and painted while on the car, did you tape off the key lock hole? or paint over it?

If you took your door handles off, how hard is it to do, can you provide detailed instructions?

any info would help me alot, the work starts Saturday, thanks!

My advise is to buy a spare set from Sterling MINI or classic MINI and find a good body shop to do them for you. You will get quality paint, not ratttle can work and your car won't be out of commision while you are doing it.

The handles run like $40 each I think. The shop that did mine charged like $100 to paint and install them.

Another point is it is hard to get them off and on without scratching your door paint.

If you are determined to do it youself though a Bentley manual should have the removal directions. I will try to remember to look it up for you.

I know a guy...

...who claimed that removing the handles CAN (and DID) cause security system problems if not done properly. Cause for many headaches if things go bad ---- according to him from bitter experience.

So, beware and make sure it is done right.

I'm thinking of having mine done CR like the rest of the car, so I was glad to see from other responses above that it is not that rare and not AS expensive to do "professionally" as I thought it would be.

I think based on this iformation that I'm gonna have a body pro do it for me.

Good luck, whatever route you choose!

This is a mod that might be better left to the pros. I know the backyard guy can get it done but from what I have heard it is a real bear of a job. I would not go the rattle can route as they paint willl be very sensative to chipping from any source , a ring for example.

Here's my small write-up on how i did my handles. It did take me more than one day, and i only would change two things: prep the handles using a courser grit (400-600), take extreme caution while removing and re-installing the handles. i screwed mine up so now i have to order new assemblies. Pics are in my gallery.
