Interior/Exterior Mod Idea...

I don't know what the techinal name for this part would be, but wouldn't you (esp on a MCS) rather have the 'groove' style stick shift, as opposed to the 'boot' style? As in, there's no boot on the stick shift, but there's a flat panel with channels/grooves for each of the gears. I don't know if it would be possible, but anything that shows of the six gears of bliss even more sounds like a good idea to me...

>>I think what you are refering to is called a gated shifter, similar to those found on a Ferrari.
Actually yes, it was on a show about Supercars that I saw it. Now, not being much of a car guy, can a regular shifter work in a 'gate', or is a gated shifter a different setup (such as a short-throw shifter)?

RocketboyX,
I've actually seen pics of this in a MINI..... Can't remember where I saw it but I know I did.
It looked like a very shoddy job. None the less it was a gate shifter.
I'm sure this can be done. The trick is making the gate and finding a good mounting point.
I'm sure if enough people are interested we can talk someone into working on it.
Judging by the replies to this thread.... we may be waiting a while. :???:

All maual shifters have gates that the selector slides into. They are just generaly hidden with a boot and padded on the edges somewhat.
Ferarri has had the tradition of the naked metal gates for a very long time. Pretty much every manual Ferarri has those style gates.
It looks cool but it does mean that you have to keep the gates clean and polish them because they are normaly bare metal. You must also be careful about keeping lose articles near the shifter because it is open and something could fall down into the mechanisms under the gates.

All very true - must not let anything near the gate to let it fall in.
My '87 328: Interior shot of 328 has the gated shifter and it is fine in a ferrari, but i think i'd still like my cooper S booted - just makes the car seem more kid friendly.

Waiting on Brilliant Silver Cooper S, anticipated manufacture 9/27
