Blacked out grill. I don't know......

Ok, so I blacked out my grill with the usual satin black automotive graphics vinyl.....

But I'm not really sold on it. Yet.

What do you SME's think?

TWISTER has a point, I didn't even think of that. It's vinyl, so it won't be too hard to try it.

I like it, esp the fact that it's satin vice gloss.....but then I like anything that tones down the chrome a bit. I think it would look even better though if the mirror covers matched.....if it was mine I think I'd keep the black and change the mirror caps.

Since it's so easy, why not try white?
I was thinking of doing this.

The beauty is that it is Vinyl and can be changed... I think white would "Pop"

Just to clarify for me......was the chrome surround covered in addition to the slats? You might consider doing the headlight trim also. I do like it. Dragonflyer from Aesthetic Creations is mulling over whether to offer a black out kit in the new carbon fiber vinyl. I think that would look great also.

I like the black, but also agree that you need to complete the look and do the headlight rings, and grille surrounds.

I think that white would be a bit much....but i think a bright silver might look the best. The white and EB are very bright colors so a highlight color like bright silver (not flakey metallic, just a glossy metallic) might be more appropriate than black. The silver would match the scoop grill i see peeking through and would ALMOST look like chrome but at the same time achieve the look of an aftermarket grille.

white sounds interesting, but if the black grows on you, you could keep it. i like the look you have. i have the aero grille, but sometimes its too black since it doesnt have the chrome trim

I got the tape at a custom graphics car shop. 24" wide by 60" long for twenty bucks. Only took about an hour and did not take anything off the car. Just de-wax the slats before you start and have a spritz bottle handy with a touch of Dawn in the water to wet the slats before you apply the tape.

Thanks gang for the critique, ideas and encouragement. (WHITE??!!)

For years I drove a '66 Chevelle in Marina/Daytona Blue with Cragar SS's and the car just sparkled. It had a stainless surround for the blacked out grill with the chrome bumper below. The EB reminds me so much of that color and with the chrome surround for the grill it just seemed natural to make it black.

We're going to the Dragon the 19th-22nd so I'll leave it on at least that long to keep the bugs off!

I think it compliments your lower grill.

I like it. I want to do this on my HB/B/B. For those who have done this, is it difficult to work with the vinyl over the contours of the grill slats?

I bought my mini w/ a chromed grille (I would have passed on it, but I didn't want to wait for 6-8 weeks for a special order and that's what came on it), so the blacked-out grille mod looks good to me... Questions:

1. How did you apply it? Did you use a FAQ or someone's mod plan? I'm curious how you got all the way back into the grille with it still on the car.
2. If you choose to remove it, will there be any issues w/ ripping up the original chrome? What about durability of the vinyl on such a high-impact place (lots of dirt, air, wind, etc.)?

Personally, I think it looks sharp. White Would be "different", but then again so would safety-orange and black urban camo- that doesn't mean it would look 'good" though.

Hey Moreorless... can you provide some sort of stock number or a brand name or something for the sheet of vinyl you bought? I've looked all over for "black automotive vinyl 24'" and various combos thereof and all I'm getting is like pinstriping tape. If you used what I THINK you used then I think I might actually attempt this as my first MOD... Well, OK, my second- I'm putting in an AUX port for my MP3 player this weekend. I know, I know, laaame, but you gotta start someplace, right?
