better down airflow from back spoiler?

Well I has only taken me 3 years to get sick of this... but I wish they would come up with a better aerodynamic wing in the back that would keep the dirty road rain water from being sucked back up on the rear of my boot!

Most of my car is always 80% clean but the back looks like I just did a hill climb!!

I'm sure it wouldn’t take that much more down airflow in that vacuum area to push the water down.

would be nice if any mini folks read this... please REDESIGN the wing!!

JCW designed just what you might be looking for.... 600 bones though.

Dirty boots are just a side effect of motoring. I don't think a spoiler will help you - maybe if you got one of those vertical spoilers you see on the backs of SUVs you could alleviate it. That would look super cool, too.

If a spoiler did deflect airflow downward, it would also be creating lift at the back of the car, which probably isn't what you want...

Anything designed to generate downforce on a MINI with it's squared off back is going to suck up debris off the road. No other way around it. That is just a problem with a square backend.

A better option would be to have some spoilers designed for the sides to pull air across the back, but this might also reduce any downforce. Not sure how it would effect the drag. Sticking out from the side would increase the frontal area, but the increase of air injected into the vaccum behind might counteract the drag increase. Might be worth a try for someone.

Nothing will keep the rear hatch clean shy of driving with it open

It has nothing to do with the wing. Its a hatchback. They get dirty.

Try driving an all black one....it stays clean after I wash it for about 5 minutes worth of driving!

Not true. Just talk to anyone with a Cooper that does not have the wing and they will have a much cleaner boot than one with the wing.

Back from the dead.

I didn't want to start another thread, but I wanted to bring something up on this topic.

I've owned 12 hatchbacks...in fact, I've NEVER owned anything but hatchbacks. They all had little rear wings, that gave the car a minimal amount of DF at speeds of 90+, mostly they were for show. Here are the 3 styles I've owned...pics of the rear only for a reason:

You'll notice the HUGE square rear window, and small spoiler on the 4G...with a very small "vent" for airflow...

5G a.k.a. "the egg" not the largest rear window of the 3, no "vent" with this year's wing...attached to hatch.

6G...also small spoiler, and large rear window, no "vent":

With optional "duckbill" spoiler...

Anyway...the point I wanted to make is that NONE of these models (all of which I have owned) ever had a hatch as dirty as the MCS hatch. The 4th generation was the worst of the bunch, but even so, even after a rain the rear window would be a bit dirty, and with dry roads it would have a very light dusting. I have a feeling a spoiler that snugs right up to the hatch would keep the back end a lot cleaner...

I did come across this...although I can't tell if it has a "vent"

Does anyone else think that with a better design we could have a cleaner rear end? It's not as if the stock MCS spoiler is really that functional for 95% of the MCS drivers anyway...

Scottinbend is mistaken on this one.
Not true. Just talk to anyone with a Cooper that does not have the wing and they will have a much cleaner boot than one with the wing.
My MCS is unspoiled, and it collects at least as much grime as it did before the despoiling, if not more.
