Does anyone know where to get black mid/high density foam similar to the kind you find attached to new car doors to protect them from dings during transport? I'm looking for such material to use as a better air seal for the intercooler cover in our "Ram Air Project". Thanks:smile:

Thanks for trying but not what I'm thinking. Ever looked under a race car with cowl induction? They place a strip of black medium density foam approximately 1" wide x 2" tall and encircles the carburator. When they close the hood, it seals the carburator to the hood which allows it to take air from the cowl only.

I know Randy Webb or Peter knows what I'm talking about...maybe I'll try contacting them.

Look under the "high performance foams" category. I think you probably want the 12 lb/ft3 EVA foam, or even better, the microcellular urethane. The latter will take less of a permanent set under load.

You asked for high density foam. They make foam, the most is used for surfboards, but that doesn't limit what it's used for other reasons.

Corning makes these insulation foams for walls, garage doors, etc. its pretty high density but it might have memory (may not push back to original shape).

 

Check with Michigan Textiles next time you need foam, they are somewhat local (Ypsilanti) and may carry what you need. Be warned they are a fabric store, but do carry some closed cell foams, and neoprene.

 

I came across something like that. It was used as packing material for a TV set. I used it to wedge between the front license plate and the front bumper on a Miata I used to have. It helped protect the front bumper from the license plate bolts.

Stop by your local Circuit City or Best Buys and ask if they have any lying around.
