Interior/Exterior Painting Headlight Housing (aka Joey Mod)
Have fun, I just finished my first headlight last night, such a pain in the ***, but now that I know what to do and where the screws are, and how it's all put together, the second one should go much faster. Hope to have it all finished by Friday night.
This looks especially nice with the combination of silver, black, and chrome highlights on your MINI. It really fits the overall color scheme and motif of the car very well. It gives it a very upscale, classy look.
Nice job...I like it a lot!

Rally, I still have the Lamin-X tint on there, I thought since it was on there already I would just leave it for now, will probably remove it in the Spring once it warms up. It does kind of hurt the light output.
Gnatster, I'm big fan of your car. There's a little less contrast with the silver car that I really like. It's just a matter of taste, no offense meant (I'm trying to completely dechrome my black car, a lot of people would say that I need more contrast). For what it's worth, your car is the only one I can remember that I really think the M7 grills work.... (foot in mouth again)

Look at the hood support structure behind the upper grill. The beam in the center and all the area behind the grill were painted a matte black. So many others still have the body color showing at that location.
For the middle grill we cut out the center of opening. The core support has holes in it, why not let more air flow onto the radiator. That area of the core support was painted matte black as was the area in the bumper where the middle grill covers. Again, many do not paint there an the body color shows through. The radiator also needs to be covered either a black mesh screen material or the very nice Bug Guard for Beemers product work well. Also take the time to give the AC lines and other silver bits a quick light coat with a rattle can matte black. The image below is how it looked before the cover went on. After test fitting then entire center section of the support was sprayed matte black. I think it's this attention to detail that makes the grill work well.
Out of the box the fit of the grills is ok but not as close as I liked. We spent considerable time with a small rubber mallet and a leather bean bag working the edges flush with the opening and preserving the curvature found in the various openings. The middle grill requires spacers to be made and slipped over the posts to prevent it from sliding back. The posts are designed to use a press fit clip but we removed the coating from the ends of the post to thread them with a die. Washers and nuts hold it in place. If M7 was to ever have the grill redesigned I's ask that they use 6 posts instead of 3. The lower grill is the most interesting of the lot to install. Here again there are only 3 tabs. It takes quite a bit of finagling and 5 hands to install these with an even gap all the way around. A few hidden washers used as spacers and them painted black took care of that chore.
